Cyber Speedway
GAME » on 1995
A sci-fi hovercraft racing game based on the 1992 PC game CyberRace, with vehicles and other concepts designed by the neo-futurist designer Syd Mead.

Overview

Cyber Speedway, known in Japan as Gran Chaser, is a sci-fi hovercraft racing game developed by Nextech and published by Sega (Company) for the Sega Saturn in 1995. Based on Cyberdream's 1992 PC game CyberRace (Game), Cyber Speedway has players racing hi-tech futuristic "sleds". While it shares several concepts with the original (including its designs from the influential neo-futurist designer Syd Mead (Person)), the game now plays in a manner similar to the F-Zero and WipEout (Franchise) series. Like the original game, the story involves an intergalactic racing competition (known in this game as the "Cyber Speedway") that was created as a replacement for full-scale conflict between the Terrans and the Kaladasians. In the Story Mode, players race as Clay Shaw, a "sled jockey" who represents Terra in an effort to resolve the war. The North American release features a licensed soundtrack from the rock band Bygone Dogs.

Sleds

The game includes five total sleds, each of which can be played in Free Run mode.

  • Terra - The game's Standard Type.
  • Kaladasia - The game's High Speed Type.
  • Alcmaeon - The game's Steering Type.
  • Drum - The game's Acceleration Type.
  • Cerebun - The game's Handicap Type.

In the game's Story Mode, players are restricted to the Terra, but can tune it before each race (affecting the engine preference between Power and Speed, the steering preference between Heavy and Light, the braking preference between Hard and Soft, and whether its prefer Boost, Shield, or Weapon).

Courses

The game includes 11 total courses spanning six locales, played in a particular order in the game's Story Mode and split into the game's two difficulty levels: Standard and Advanced.

  1. Terra (Standard / Advanced)
  2. Glacies (Standard / Advanced)
  3. Vastitas (Standard / Advanced)
  4. Nubes (Standard / Advanced)
  5. Evoflammas (Standard / Advanced)
  6. Armasatelles (Advanced)
