Overview

Cryptmaster is a first-person dungeon crawler that uses a text parser. This factors both into the combat, where the player is required to type in words that correspond to their members' abilities, such as "JAB" for the rogue's dagger attack or "SOOTHE" for the bard's healing spell, as well as when exploring and picking up treasure. Rewards are typically letters that are added to each character's active memory: by filling out the word that character could potentially unlock a new ability word to use in combat. The player also acquires souls, with which they can use higher-level commands or trade them with vendors for items. The story has the eponymous Cryptmaster raise four ancient heroes, who died in battle against a great evil, so he can use them to assault the surface world from his subterranean crypts. Since they've been dead so long they need to remember their old skills and abilities as they explore the underworld before they're strong enough to take on the humans living up top. The Cryptmaster remains with the team throughout as a constant narrator, guiding (and sometimes insulting) them on their journey.
