Overview
The Cromwell tank, named after the English Civil War leader Oliver Cromwell, was one of the most successful series of tanks fielded by Britain in
World War II. It began production in November 1942, a total of 4016 tanks were made.
It was the first British tank to combine a dual-purpose gun, high speed, and decent armor in one balanced package. Its design was used to inspire many new British tank designs, such as the Comet. It was designed as a replacement for the Crusader tank, which was becoming obsolete. It had a big powerful motor and a 75mm gun that could fire high-explosive shells. It was first used in June 1944 during Operation Overlord, but the reception was mixed amongst the crew. It was faster and had a lower profile than the
Sherman tank. However, while its armor was of equivalent thickness, it was not sloped and therefore less effective than that of the Sherman. The gun didn't live up to its task either, it was very weak and the gun of the Sherman tank was superior. The British wanted to change the 75mm gun on the Cromwell to and 17 Pounder gun, but instead, they were used on the British/Canadian Firefly variant of the Sherman tank.
