    Cooldowns

    Concept »

A notable time delay which ignores the character/player state (like having enough mana) and prevents an ability or action from being done. This concept is common in MMORPGs, but does occur in other genres.

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Cooldowns

Cooldowns are essentially a delay in time (real time and turns are included) in which an ability or action in a game can be used again. Hence, skills with this property effectively have infinite uses regardless of mana/energy/ammo or whatever resources though they do have a similar effect.

The term "Cooldown" can also be used to describe the minimum length of time a player must wait to repeat an action. This mechanic can be another factor to weigh into high level play or competitive play, as it can stack with cast time, power or mana usage for how viable a strategy is.
