Happy New Year's, everyone!!! I'm opening up my Video Game Hall of Fame next Thursday. In other words, every Thursday, I'm going to feature a popular video game character and give a little info on him or her. We're going to start things right by featuring a character everyone knows, whether they played video games or not, and I think you know who I mean. Be sure to check out my lists every Thur...

While 2021 didn’t hit me like 2020, it was just a continuation of what that year became which was…disappointing. While I’m a generally quiet person and am fine hanging out at home for the most part, I still enjoy going shopping in the city, meeting up with friends and going to the movies on a regular basis. 2021 had little to none of that and this was also compounded by the fact that I lost a l...

2021: My Year of Wadjet Eye Intro At the outset of 2021, I made the decision to finally play through all of the Blackwell games. Something I had started almost a decade ago but never finished. As it turned out, this was a fairly modest goal that did not take long. So, with the release of Strangeland just around the corner at that time, I made the decision that by the end of 2021 I would finish...

Lost in Random is not the game I was expecting it to be. I thought this was going to be a combat focused action game with some story stuff thrown in around the edges. Instead it’s very much a story driven adventure game with some combat arenas. A lot of combat arenas. Too many combat arenas, really, but we’ll get to that a bit later. Lost in Random is the kind of AA game we don’t see a lot thes...

Decided to spend the second half of 2021 checking out some renowned visual novels . Sometimes my ideas aren't any more elaborate than that. I've tried to discuss the following games in as spoiler-free a manner as possible, with a very spoilerish section at the end for my final thoughts on where the story goes. Yeah, I dunno what to tell you, but this is the third month in a row where I selected...

When Returnal first came out in April this year -- and what a year -- I knew I was going to absolutely adore it. Everything about the look and sound, cribbing from such distinct sci-fi horror sources as Edge of Tomorrow , Prometheus , and Annihilation , just worked for me, in a way that made me rather annoyed that I didn't have a Playstation 5 to actually play it on. And yet, the initial reacti...

Japanese Role Playing Games might legitimately be my least favorite genre of game. Even saying something like “least favorite” doesn’t sit particularly well with me. I think “most disliked” probably puts the correct amount of stank on it. There are few genres of games I do not regularly engage with and simulation sports being another one that stands out to me, I wouldn’t say I even dislike them...

1. Nioh 2 Remastered It's kind of cheating, since this is a remaster of a 2020 game, but I was lucky enough to get a PS5 this year and one of the first games I played on it was Nioh 2 Remastered. It might be the only game on this list I'm still actively playing, and possibly one of my top 5 favorite games of all time, so... Yeah, it's my #1 for 2021. It has it's quirks for sure, but if you want...

2021 has been a bit of a wild year, hasn’t it? While 2020 was the genesis of lockdowns, mask mandates, supply chain crises, and overall exposure to the absurdness of the world when pushed to their limits, 2021 presented a different challenge of ‘Now what?’ That unknown middle chapter where Covid is a malaise on the state of everything that we just have to accept whether we like it or not for th...

F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch is a great looking game. I think it’s important to say that from the outset because I’m going to bury this game in a lot of ways, but the graphics definitely impressed me. I played it on PS5 and while it’s not the most technically impressive title on the system its stylistic fusion of neo noir and robot styles mixed with some impressive animation and textures mak...

Kena: Bridge of Spirits seemed like a surefire winner to me. A critically praised, beautiful and gentle-looking game with a linear action-adventure structure is exactly the sort of game that I tend to vibe with. With a protagonist whose staff looks like she borrowed it from Star Fox Adventures and whose plucky attitude is reminiscent of Link from the Zelda series it promised to be lighthearted,...

Ever since having to readjust my gaming life considerably, I've had a lot of conversations with people about mobile games. Surprisingly, almost everyone I talked to still thinks of phone games as the relics of app store garbage from a decade ago. It's a mentality that I've seen a lot, with multiple genres. Every free game is pay-to-win, every gachapon game is a cash grab and every mobile game i...

Christmas is over so I feel like playing Grinch and complaining about some of the recurrent issues in modern game design that piss me off. These aren’t the most serious issues in the game industry (such as workplace abuse, microtransactions, NFTs etc…) and they aren’t even issues that annoy every gamer but they are complaints that I need to get off my chest and so I’m gonna do it, and nobody ca...

This year has been, well, another year for games. A lot of newer games didn’t always hit me in a big way this year, but that sure didn’t stop me from trying. Here’s a few things to know about the list: in past years for me, the “And 1” spot was traditionally for a game that either might not have otherwise made the list due to a technicality (port, expansion, remaster, early access etc.). Really...

In 2019, I made a Giant Bomb x LEGO BrickHeadz crossover. Two years later, with some changes to the crew, it needed an update.

2021 was what you can define as a year. Congratulations to all the studios and teams that launched games in the last year. As a person who knows very little about game development, I’m sure it was no easy task. Something I realized when putting my list together this year, is how many mobile games I played and how many made the list compared to my previous lists. Those games were great when I wa...

Realms of the Haunting I'm genuinely sorry I don't have more to say about this but sometimes shooters don't actually have a whole lot going on Developer : Gremlin Interactive Release Date : Early 1997 Time Played : A little less than 90 mins Troubleshooting : There’s some tomfoolery you can do to revert the version that’s on Steam and GOG to the US version of the game, which lets you remap keys...

GOTY discussions are always weird for me. I rarely play the latest releases, because I don't have the latest systems. I play almost exclusively on Switch and iOS, so most of the big AAA blockbusters aren't going to be here. Some of these weren't released in 2021, but I didn't get to play them until this year. Unless otherwise noted, I played all of these on the Switch. Arknights (iOS, Android)...

The title is a double entendre, because I'm dying of a mysterious illness. That's not the subject here though, I just thought that would be funny. Rather, I wanted to do some housekeeping and hold myself accountable, inspired by another Giant Bomb thread about finishing your video game plate. Four months ago, I mentioned in my questing blog that I finally started tackling my backlog dark horse,...
