I've outlined what I'm trying to accomplish in an intro post so that I can just dive right into things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Air Combat Release Date: 9/9/1995? I've never owned or touched the original Playstation. I was fairly young during its time and I was in a Nintendo household, so I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64 but I didn't even know Playstations existed until well into the PS2 era. I've dabbled a bit over the years but the whole PS1 catalog is a huge blind spot for me. So, in a feverish fit of bad ideas, I've decided to do a blog series w...

Anytime this quote is brought up nowadays, it’s either dismissed outright or treated as a joke, but does the quote have a place in the current gaming era? It’s easy to look at the quote and say, “Well, a delayed game can still be bad, and a rushed game can be updated, so the quote means nothing.” But unfortunately, despite both of these being indisputable facts, games still get released in inco...

With video games, timing is everything. Whether it's a rhythm game, a fighting game, or even a visual novel, pressing the right button at the wrong time will mess things up. This fact applies to making and releasing games, too: Video game history is littered with almost-sure-fire hits that had solid ideas or mechanics at heart but failed to find the audience another later product managed to gra...

Lo-Fi Plays is a series of blogs that aims to highlight the smaller, minimal-budget titles that often fall under the radar. It's me finding the positives in the most obscure class of indies out there. Keeping with the theme of my last couple of articles, the picks for this week will be games about physics and space exploration. Enjoy. Gravity Trails Gravity Trails is a 2D platformer that has yo...

2022 is shaping up to be an excellent year for fans of FromSoftware 's challenging Souls action-RPGs, debuting one of its most highly-rated (and oddly mainstream-revered) hits with Elden Ring . However, it might surprise you to learn that this so-called "Souls" "franchise" has been inspiring smaller developers since its inception in 2009, and we've seen regular installments from the Indie circu...

It's not news that I go through game collection sprees periodically. I've been looking for a Wii U for months now. You'd think it would be easy to find someone doing away with a console no one wants. For some reason though, people are selling their unwanted child for either way too much or in a ridiculous, incomplete state. Then, two-ish weeks ago, I finally replaced my broken Playstation 1 wit...

Welcome to another episode of "Mento took way too many notes when playing a game and just dumps the whole .txt file on Giant Bomb's readership to sort out," also known as (by no-one) the Mento Discovery Series. La-Mulana 2 is the Kickstarter-funded 2018 sequel to fan-favorite explormer and sado-masochism simulator La-Mulana and very much follows in its footsteps as a deliberately tough, mean-sp...

Note: This article contains major spoilers for Outer Wilds. Last week, I talked about Mobius Digital's Outer Wilds and how it gets players implementing the scientific method. What I didn't discuss as much were the physical discoveries that the game incorporates into its universe. Scientists get accused of being closed-minded because they exclude the supernatural from their worldview, but this c...

Night Slashers is the first game I spent significant time with on my Switch in a while. I’m not sure why I hadn’t been feeling Nintendo’s little hybrid this year, but despite having some anticipation for Kirby and mild interest in Mario Strikers I just haven’t wasn’t playing it. But I have been on an inexplicable beat ‘em up kick lately and the idea of playing Night Slashers appealed to me just...

Spiritfarer made quite a splash (boat jokez) during Giant Bomb's own 2020 GOTY but at the time I was determined to learn as little as possible about it; by the end of 2020 I was familiar with Thunder Lotus Games 's other projects ( Jotun , which was IGotW #31 , and Sundered , which was IGotW #174 ), and was curious enough about an upcoming narrative-focused adventure about the afterlife, which...

I don't think we as a society talk enough about Mega Man . Before Monster Hunter , before Resident Evil , and before Street Fighter II , Mega Man was a star on Nintendo’s Famicom (and the NES soon after that). Capcom made a lot of wonderful games for Nintendo's 8-bit console, but none have had the staying power of Mega Man. And this week's topic is a big reason why: Mega Man 3 . The blue bomber...

I like to think I'm an open-minded individual (and yes, I know how many alarm bells it sets off when starting a review with a sentence like that). I've long tolerated this very site's insistence in shoe-horning wrestling into every conversation, despite actively wanting to escape from the planet every time it pops up. I guess it's not just so much that I'm not into the whole tights and fights b...

I don't know if coincidences are real or if everything we encounter is a deliberate arrangement of events for the benefit of an unseen force. Still, one funny thing I thought of recently is how closely the rise of video games matched the fall of westerns. Cowboys were a staple of film and television in popular culture for decades, lasting well into the 1980s. Still, just as video games grew in...
