I've developed a strong aversion over the years to run-based games, or the Rogue-esques as I believe they're called, half because they're too inconsiderate of one's time due to the regular progression-wipes that is part and parcel of their genetic make-up, and half because any one person's proc-gen experience is far too subjective to be of much value in the context of a review. That isn't to sa...

In case you missed it, Wizards of the Coast announced a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons today, with a preliminary release date of 2024. As with 5th Edition, they've started a playtesting process, which you can find out more about in that link. I participated in the previous playtest and was pretty confused by the early form of 5e (which attempted to go by the name "D&D Next"). This one seems...

Wherever you think the blame lies, Halo Infinite has had a rough time of it. After a much-publicised delay , this living shooter burst onto the scene in late 2021 with original, balanced, and energising action at its core . Yet, it also attracted vocal criticism for its technical instability , copious network latency , and impoverishment of features and unlockables . A particular weak spot was...

I'm not going to hit you all again with my usual spiel about how Indie adventure games have been a powerful force for change in a genre that was mostly all text parsers and walls of verbs like "smell" and "put in butt" before the '00s, as it could practically be a copy/pasted disclaimer at this point with the amount of times I've wheeled it out, but I will add a corollary to my pitch that the I...

Preamble - SPOILERS INCOMING! Look, the problem isn't you! I just think you all deserve a better game! Every year when GOTY season rolls around, I award a special commendation titled the "Ostrich Award." This superlative goes to the game with the most significant delta between my opinion and the game's consensus between reviewers and the internet. I recognize wholeheartedly I am a stubborn pers...

Way, way back in ancient times when the Earth was still new, also known as the 1980s, there were three major CRPG franchises duking it out for supremacy on any early IBM PC with the processors to handle them: Ultima , Wizardry , and Might and Magic . All have since met with ignominious ends: Ultima vanished into space along with Richard Garriott 's rocket (which, I should clarify, did not actua...

It'll be five years to the day on Sunday since I last posted a blog here on Giant Bomb. That's not to say I've left the site over this time; in fact I think I've kept up decently well with everything that's gone on with the site over the years, though admittedly with an ebb and flow of interest, for various reasons. When it came to the act of forming my thoughts on games into words, like I'd do...

So I bought a Nintendo Switch . I think I said that already. With the help of the Giant Bomb community, I made a small list of games that I'd one day try to find an affordable copy of, though I'll admit it's a mission that's a lot harder than I thought. Nintendo things are an eternal constant. There are about a dozen titles I'm keeping an eye out for, like Selener. While I'm waiting for the fat...

If you were to ask me most days what single video game genre I couldn't live without, I'd probably answer "RPGs." I might be cheating the spirit of the inquiry by referring to RPGs in a general sense - western, eastern, tactical, action - as that versatility and variety are often the genre's greatest strengths. Few genres have escaped a stringent degree of codification the way RPGs have, except...
