I enjoyed my time with Diablo 4 last year and placed it at #5 on my GOTY list , but even so, the game had issues and there was clear room for improvement. E.g., leveling was too grindy, stash space was a problem, and there was really very little to do at endgame after capping your character level at 100. It was definitely a better game than Diablo 3 had been at its own launch (remember the auct...

Movie review: Aliens Two Jane Fondas in one The 2 covers of books on Alien movies’ production by the late J W Rinzler seem very similar to each other as far as your truly is considered. Both feature Ripley fully suited up in process of killing dickhead monsters. The difference being the vacuum suit in Alien is for defense while the power loader in Aliens is for offense. Sigourney Weaver certain...

Movie review: Alien The 4K releases for Alien and Alines. The third one and Resurrection would not be covered by this humble blogger at this time. Partially because I do not own home release of those. The other reason might be… Corman Connection 2024 marks the forty-fifty anniversary of Alien. It’s bit surreal to think that this influential flick is almost half a century old. But then again, se...

An explanation of what we're doing here can be found in the introduction post . Last time, we endured the gauntlet of Jaguar games released in December '94 with Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales, Kasumi Ninja, Val d'Isère Skiing and Snowboarding, Zool 2, and Iron Soldier . When we were last with the PS1, we looked back at the first half of '96 with our Mid-Year Round-up . We're now entering July w...

Note: This article contains major spoilers for Half-Life and Half-Life: Blue Shift. Last week , I unpacked Half-Life: Opposing Force, and I didn't make my disappointment with it much of a secret. Valve's Half-Life delicately integrated you into its setting , but Opposing Force's Black Mesa kept you at arm's length and, in the late game, rallied Shock Troopers and Voltigores to snipe you the sec...

When the Voice of Cards games were announced I was excited. I like deckbuilders, I like RPGs, I like most of what Square Enix does, it was co-directed by the fantastic Yoko Taro; the idea seemed like a guaranteed hit. Then the games released to mixed critical reception and I read somewhere that they weren’t real RPGs with stories, just dungeon crawlers that used cards for everything in annoying...

Last week you might recall that I broke my streak of endless explormer s on this feature by playing Tangle Tower , a delightful whodunnit adventure game, so I want to assure all those unsettled by this recent development that we are fully back into exploring big maps for traversal abilities with this week's game Carrion from Phobia Game Studio . I know, it was a scary and uncertain time on Indi...

The Gaming Industry Narrative That Will Never Die Wow, what bravery and goodness that he halved his salary. For those of you who follow me on social media, you know this is a point I have been belaboring for literal years. The minute a game studio announces a fresh batch of layoffs; I publicly repeat the same bit about not wanting to see people in the video game hobby and press repeat the publi...

This is mostly a reminder to myself. I have a lot of fun making fun of the Amico and its tribulations, but at the heart of the story there is a real and serious scandal. Whether or not it rises to the level of criminally or civilly actionable fraud depends on certain facts that aren't publicly known, but even if it doesn't meet the legal definition, the fact is that a lot of lies were told and...

Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore is a joke game. Meant as a riff on the infamous CD-I games Link: The Faces of Evil and more specifically Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon the game only is the way it is in order to reference a misstep so creatively disastrous that it prevented Nintendo from licensing its IP to partner companies for decades. If the games were just bad they would be vaguely remembered sid...

An explanation of what's going on here can be found in the intro post . Last time we looked back at the Saturn in early 1996 in our half year Round-Up . Last time with the Jaguar, we looked at our second batch of games in 1994 with Checkered Flag, Club Drive, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, and Doom . Now, we're wrapping up the Jaguar in 1994 with the most cursed European vibes possible as we look...

I'm not sure how to start this one after 8 objectively eventful years, domestically, nationally, globally, and with respect to the site. I'm home now, trying to pivot to something else after a very stressful enlistment which changed my personality and life a lot. Almost didn't make it back. Some of my friends didn't, some family didn't. One of the things which gave me a lot of comfort back in t...

Fellow Amicoans. By now you have heard the news . If you’re anything like me your initial reaction was abject horror. I felt like a beloved family member had suddenly died. Like a massive terrorist attack had wiped out thousands of lives. Like my doctor had called to tell me I had stage 4 cancer. We have all built our lives and identities around the Intellivision Amico and to hear that the Inte...

Note: The following article contains major spoilers for Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force, and Half-Life: Blue Shift. The Gearbox Software of today is barely recognisable as the fresh-faced Texas developer that launched in 1999. The studio did its stint in the WWII shooter genre with Brothers in Arms and is best known for its firepower delivery chute, Borderlands. Yet, for its first six year...

Shocker of shockers, I'm not playing an explormer this week. I still have plenty of them on standby, don't doubt that for a moment, but even I have to admit that everything's better in moderation. Or maybe that's just my Moderator bias talking. Either way, I've switched tracks to another old favorite of mine—the classic point-and-click adventure game—with this week's Tangle Tower , originally f...

Why is there a remaster of the barely remembered 3DO FPS game PO'ed? I'll admit that it had an attention grabbingly insane premise of a chef fighting aliens but it is not fondly remembered. It's the kind of game that would be interesting as part of a 3DO mini-console or retrospective pack (something like the Atari 50th collection for the 3DO would be great) but doesn't seem like it would be wor...

I should start off by saying that I never played Killzone back when it was relevant. My first experience with the series was in 2014 when I played the HD PS3 version of the first game. I kind of enjoyed that game. I then tried Killzone 2 in 2019 and...I really didn't like it. While Killzone 1 was sort of an interesting throwback shooter from the PS2 days, slow paced and not quite like anything...
