Wild Youth: An Analysis of Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Published Aug 18, 2018
Note: The following article contains major spoilers for Life is Strange, and Life is Strange: Before the Storm, as well as brief discussion of sexual assault. I don't know about you, but for me, the confused and hurried ending of the original Life is Strange made me forget the pioneering accomplishments in its first four chapters. A frequently tender and tranquil game, Life is Strange was an es...

Saturday Summaries 2018-08-18: Evergame Edition
Published Aug 18, 2018
Recently, after accruing several of them over the past few months, I've been considering the pros and cons of "evergames": a goofy appellation for games which are built in such a way to be effectively endless. Or, as is more often the case, games you play until you decide you're done with them, rather than them showing you the door or dropping the curtain with some sort of conclusive end-game s...

What's Goin' Down: My Most Anticipated Games
Published Aug 16, 2018
Do you smell it? Things are changing. Soon, the leaves will fall and the cool air will blow. Not that I'll notice, because I'll be too busy playing those new video games! Between God of War, the Yakuza series, and catching up on the Switch's cavernous library, this year has already bore some impressive gaming fruit for me. But that don't mean we're done by a long shot! Conveniently for blogging...

Indie Game of the Week 83: Volgarr the Viking
Published Aug 16, 2018
I sort of knew what I was in for by booting up the legendarily brutal Brad-breaker Volgarr the Viking , but curiosity kills cats and Norseman alike. Besides, you can't really get a measure of a game until you have it in your hands and can see for yourself the way it controls and flows and can piece together in your mind what it is about the game that you personally hate. OK, maybe that's just t...

The Myth of Difficulty
Published Aug 15, 2018
Hollow Knight is a video game that first released in early 2017 for the PC . I played that initial release, and it ended up being one of my favorite games of 2017 . There’s a laundry list of things I love about it too: The world is incredibly well-designed and full of details I love exploring. The art style does a lot to bring the world to life, along with the diverse set of creatures you encou...

Slow Night: An Analysis of VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
Published Aug 11, 2018
Note: The following article contains major spoilers for VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. As VA-11 HALL-A had me mixing ingredients for discerning customers at the counter of a bar, there was one and only one other game I found myself comparing it to: Cook, Serve, Delicious. There are a smattering of games set in drinking and dining establishments, but unlike so many others, both VA-11...

Saturday Summaries 2018-08-11: Franchise Frenzy Edition
Published Aug 11, 2018
Two recent events - the upcoming Mega Archive episode and the news that more major emulation sites are getting shut down - has me thinking about the availability of older games. One of the "statistics" I include with every Mega Drive game featured in the Mega Archive series is a rundown of where someone might be able to pick up the game in question in this day and age. For most, if they're not...

I'm gonna rant about Final Fantasy XIV now.
Published Aug 10, 2018
Spoilers and shit. If you had asked me a year ago to name one of my favorite games of all time, I would have happily named Final Fantasy XIV as one of those games. Hell, I even named it one of my favorite games of the decade and despite how I feel now, I wouldn't change go back and change that because at the time, I was still having fun. These days? Not so much. I still have the utmost respect...

Indie Game of the Week 82: Endless Legend
Published Aug 9, 2018
A few weeks back when I covered Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition on Indie Game of the Week, I briefly expounded on my quixotic endeavor (thesaurus working overtime today) to find a modern interpretation of Simtex 's nonpareil 4X civilization-sim Master of Magic . Master of Magic was an extraordinarily ambitious confluence of ideas to effectively create a bridge between a Sid Meier -esque macro-siz...

I just can't get hyped for Red dead 2
Published Aug 9, 2018
I so want to be as hyped as everyone else for the next red dead but I'm just not feeling it. Right off the bat here I'm gunna say that I am of Native American heritage and that will color a lot of my opinions here. Now I did play Red dead redemption and did not nearly feel as harsh about it. Something about John Marston did not repel me(although I hated his son). The gameplay was great the sett...

Switch City, Vol. 5: Picross S2
Published Aug 8, 2018
Vol. 4: Enter the Gungeon Attention, everyone! I'm back with a hot-off-the-presses new release on the Switch. It's the sequel to Picross S , Picross S2!!!! I had no idea this was coming out. It just sort of dropped from the heavens and I was more than happy to pick it up. I've still got a long way to go in Picross S (and I've barely touched mega picross) but I wanted to see what was up in the s...

The SNES Classic Mk. II: Episode XVI: Too Easy
Published Aug 7, 2018
The SNES Classic had a sterling assortment of games from Nintendo's 16-bit star console, but it's hardly all that system has to offer a modern audience. In each installment of this fortnightly feature, I judge two games for their suitability for a Classic successor based on four criteria, with the ultimate goal of assembling another collection of 25 SNES games that not only shine as brightly as...

NamCompendium 11: Ms. Pac-Man, Pt. 2
Published Aug 6, 2018
Let us continue our long, NamCompendium nightmare that is the documentation of Ms. Pac-Man's ports . This "not really a Namco game but they sorta repatriated it kinda into canon" game started its life as (probably) a joint Namco- General Computer Corporation - Midway joint before being licensed to Atari, Incorporated , who then dragged GCC into developing versions of Ms. Pac-Man for Atari platf...

2018 "List of Games I Love" Update
Published Aug 5, 2018
Many years ago when Lists were new to the site I made a List of Games I Love . I've been adding to that list ever since but never removing from the list. Nearly 10 years is a long time. I do not feel the same way about many of these games as I did then. So, it's time to take stock. In this blog I will list the games being removed, and why so there will be some record as to what was on the list....

Development Hell: An Analysis of Pony Island
Published Aug 4, 2018
Note: This article contains major spoilers for Pony Island, Spec Ops: The Line, and Undertale and mild spoilers for Doki Doki Literature Club and Frog Fractions. You can only see and play so much horror before you become desensitised to it. For devotees of the macabre medium, what was once nail-biting becomes predictable and what was once terrifying becomes tame. Bait-and-switch horror is one r...

Saturday Summaries 2018-08-04: Confluence Edition
Published Aug 4, 2018
I've been batting around a game design observation that I don't have a name for yet ("something something confluence", but to paraphrase BioShock Infinite the mind struggles to create puns where none can exist) but pertains largely to crafting, survival and "life-sim" games. Chiefly, that these games present a concrete, primary objective and then gives the floor to any number of optional modes...
