The site's big change this past week has been updating their review format to a more casual roundtable discussion between the various staff members who have played the game in question, which for this inaugural test run was Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man . It could be that we might see another for next week's Shadow of the Tomb Raider , and possibly (though my hopes aren't high) one for Valkyr...

In July, I woke up after a night of caffeine and video games and started getting the kids ready for a birthday party we were going to 2 hours away. I stayed up till like 1am playing games on my computer, normal for me especially on the weekend. I had my normal cup of morning coffee which was 12 ounces loaded with creamer. As we left our town, my wife suggested we get some Starbucks to which I h...

I played for around 12 hours and still intend to play more the last two days of the beta. I'm really impressed by how much I liked the shooting and movement. Positives: I loved how the guns feel, I think it might be the best shooting in a battlefield game ever, the damaged is well balanced as well. The game is really smooth, I was impressed by how well my PC performed on it despite not being re...

I've been curious about these Holy Potatoes! games for a while now, since new ones seem to keep popping up on Steam whenever my head is turned. The developers, Daylight Studios , are working on the fourth one now, so I figure these games must be doing something right. It turns out Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is one of those real-time "plate-spinner" sims: the type of game that is half clicke...

Deep Listens is a gaming podcast series I'm recording with a few of my friends. Every two weeks we pick and play a new game and then discuss it from a literary, philosophical, and game design perspective. Its kind of like a book club for video games. We try to dig as deep as we can on an individual game every episode so check it out! Who is this boy and why should we care? In this episode Gino,...

Better late than never. The first event to finish this weekend was the Europe Ranking Event, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2018. AngryBird ended up taking 1st place at the event with Zeku of all characters. Previously, the highest AngryBird had placed was 5th at Sonic Boom, so this was quite a big win for him. With AngryBird rocketing up the EU leaderboard, Akainu has been knocked out of qualifying f...

Having escaped the clutches of both the Dota 2 and Hearthstone, two games which have collectively soaked up thousands of hours of my life, not to mention hundreds of dollars from my bank vault, the news that Valve was making a card game that seemed similar to Hearthstone but using the dota 2 characters and aesthetic was something that I was vaguely interested in but determined to ignore. A coup...

The SNES Classic had a sterling assortment of games from Nintendo's 16-bit star console, but it's hardly all that system has to offer a modern audience. In each installment of this fortnightly feature, I judge two games for their suitability for a Classic successor based on four criteria, with the ultimate goal of assembling another collection of 25 SNES games that not only shine as brightly as...

Welcome to “Gaming Memories,” a blog series where I reminisce about my favorite video games . I will slowly but surely get to every game on the list, and speak to why each holds a special place in my heart. That not only means I’ll talk about why I think each is a great game that speaks to my tastes, but also where and how it affected me in a larger context. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for rea...

Note: This article contains major spoilers for Mad Max (2015) as well as moderate spoilers for every film in the series. The conventional wisdom is that the only way to create an adequate video game adaptation of a property is by lifting its existing elements and then expressing those elements through the aesthetics, narrative, and play of a game. But I disagree; I think there's as much or mayb...

I've been browsing through some of my old "Lists of Shame" - an annual reminder to stop buying new games and play the untouched ones I already have - for a sense of what I've abandoned from the previous console generation and how slow it's been to come around on some others that, despite my best intentions, remained or still remain sitting unloved on a shelf for years. Now that we've entered Se...

If there's one thing that an Indie developer can do to earn my respect, it's when they have the chutzpah make a play for the Zelda throne. The original 1986 The Legend of Zelda came out swinging with its unique blend of Tower of Druaga and Hydlide , minimizing the RPG elements (not that Druaga or Hydlide had much of either) for a purely puzzle, action and exploration-oriented game. In the decad...

Hey folks, Derek here. Also known as “the guy who makes those Best of Giant Bomb videos”. Yeah, I can’t believe they haven’t replaced me yet with somebody else yet either. Anyways, I’m here to unveil my next video series that I’m doing: Best Match Ever! The quick elevator pitch is that over the past couple of years we’ve heard the phrase “Best Match Ever” being thrown around constantly to descr...

Well, since I finished writing a review for Stranger of Sword City (https://www.giantbomb.com/stranger-of-sword-city/3030-42558/user-reviews/2200-30816/) I might well write some hints, while the game still fresh in my mind. Keep in mind, this as just stuff I either figured about, maybe read here and there, but mostly stuff which worked for me, might no be the most awesome or effective hints. So...

The brilliant Ms. Pac-Man was the offspring of what amounted to stretching the terms of a licensing agreement between Namco and Midway . The latter wanted to leverage the former’s intellectual property for more arcade profits, and brought in General Computer Corporation’s bootleg expertise to create a game that sublimely iterates on an already incredible blueprint. While the details remain murk...

One of the rules of nature, or at least my nature, is to mock the overwrought Metal Gear franchise at every opportunity. That's how it was for the following Metal Gear Solid playthroughs, most of which occurred simultaneously with the site's " Metal Gear Scanlon " premium features: Mento Gear Solid MGS1: Part One Mento Gear Solid 2: React-Sons of Incredulity MGS2: Part One : Tanker MGS2: Part T...

Note: This article contains mild spoilers for The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. When we solve a smartly-designed puzzle, we get a little dose of dopamine not just because games explicitly frame this as a success but also because there's a part of our brain which responds to us clicking together seemingly disparate pieces in a way that makes logical sense. It's that same feeling of accom...

I was alerted to news the other day that The Last Remnant , an Unreal Engine-based RPG created by Square Enix for Xbox 360 and PC and geared towards western audiences, is to be removed from the Steam store close to its tenth anniversary. Now, this could mean that a remaster is on the way, but it seems odd to not announce that in the same note as the removal of the original. Another possibility...

It's been a while, so it's time for another feelings game. Last Day of June is that sort of adventure game that's geared towards spinning a narrative first and foremost with puzzles and other more traditional forms of video game conflict taking secondary roles. While the summer slowly creeps to a close, I’ve been slowly creeping my way through a handful of games, as one does when they don't have much of a social life and a fairly large backlog of video games to look at. I could tell you about how I think Dead Cells is pretty good even though I’m sick to death of “run-based games with a similar permanent death structure to the old computer game Rogue a...
