I wrote in my Game of the Year list about MLB The Show 18 getting its hooks into me through Diamond Dynasty, which is this franchise's answer to EA's Ultimate Team mode. It's exploitative and grind-y in all the ways designed to keep player engagement and spending up in gross ways, but I couldn't resist the appeal of building a team with Johnny Bench in his prime at catcher, Bryce Harper and Ted...

Previous Lists (and ones): 2010 (Mass Effect 2) , 2011 (Skyrim) , 2012 (Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward) , 2013 (The Last of Us) , 2014 (Dark Souls 2) , 2015 (Bloodborne) , 2016 (Inside) , 2017 (NieR: Automata) Around September, this list was looking grim, a lot of my enjoyment was coming from games that were released in previous years or remasters, thankfully, a strong group of games hit at t...

Alright so throughout the year I kept thinking man 2018 really just doesn't hold a candle to 2017 in terms of games. I think I might have been wrong? Theres not the sheer crazy volume of insanely good games but man I love a lot of games in 2018 too! Pretty good year! I once again didn't play dota and instead played probably too much Destiny, but not to the point where other games got pushed out...

1. God of War (2018) It was the best game of the year, in a year that looked pretty quiet since I didn't catch many of the best indies and haven't had time to play RDR2. Loved the look and the Nordic setting sits very well with a Finn who loves hiking and spending time outdoors. Liked the gameplay and I got positively surprised by the characters of Atreus and Kratos. Having very little woman re...

[This is the third entry in a countdown of the best Ridge Racer games. I recommend you read the introduction before reading this; it includes a brief history of the series and links for each entry.] Ridge Racer 3D - Nintendo 3DS , 2011 I'm comin' for that ass, Inky. Ridge Racer 3D is a bit like Ridge Racer V: it doesn't exactly shake things up. There's more to it than the PS2 launch title, but...

Note: The following article contains mild spoilers for all games mentioned. Every year I publish a GotY piece which looks not at the best games that came out in the last twelve months, but at my favourite games that I played for the first time. The rationale? New games are expensive and older games deserve more love. Here are my top ten plays from 2018: Agents of Mayhem This entry is as much a...

Deep Listens is a gaming podcast series I'm recording with a few of my friends. Every two weeks we pick and play a new game and then discuss it from a literary, philosophical, and game design perspective. Its kind of like a book club for video games. We try to dig as deep as we can on an individual game every episode so check it out! We made things hard this year. In this episode Gino, Pete, Bi...

Welcome, all, to the final Saturday Summaries of 2018! As is customary for the end of any quarter, I'm going to use my intro segment to talk about the games coming up in the near future. 2019, like 2018, looks to start strong and maybe peter out a little as we approach the summer months. There's still so much about the upcoming year that we don't yet know, however. The following is hardly an ex...

Ghosthouse's 2018 Top 10 11 Games of the Year! This was a pretty good year for games! There was a good variety of small stuff and big stuff and both brought some heavy hitters to the table. There are a bunch of likely deserving games I haven't gotten around to or spent enough time with yet ( Celeste , Into the Breach , Tetris Effect , Return of the Obra Dinn ). But from what I did play this yea...

Boy, 2018, am I right? It’s been a weird rollercoaster for me, with plenty of good stuff and goals accomplished to go alongside the endless nightmare of our current political reality™ and the more personal nightmare of sometimes life sucks.™ For better or worse, I haven’t exactly written as much as I thought I would. I wouldn’t exactly say the Giant Bomb’s blogging community (or the forums in g...

I did write a list of my 2018 GOTYs, but I wish to expand it a bit more: Best Surprise: Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet I did write a review for this game on this site, but to try to expand a bit more. This was a very good surprise for me, when I saw the first articles and previews about it, it got my attention, but I was not expecting much. However, once I played I loved the game a lot, so much...

I really did not play very many games this year. Like, I guess I technically played 18 games that released in 2018 , but most of those I spent an hour or less with. Old games I spent a significant amount of time with this year were Forza Horizon, Cuphead, and Fortnite. The first two were a result of me buying an Xbox One X, primarily as a 4K Blu-ray player, and figuring I should play something...

Born to die. World is a fuck. Here are video games I liked in 2018. 10. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Everyone is here! This is an enormous, ridiculous game that shouldn't exist- I love that it does. 70+ characters from Mario to Bayonetta to Solid Snake to the Wii Fit Trainer. The formula is as much fun as ever, but more importantly for me, this is probably the best single-player Smash Bros. there...

Game of the year, twenty oh eighteen Some might say the worst of years and one that contained many games that came out. Let's focus on the latter (while ignoring the definitions of "came out" and "2018" and review the 10 games that I really enjoyed in 2018. In an order, because of lists. 10 - Crosscode Of all the games I could have played that were character focused 2D action games this is the...

It's been a terrible year in many ways, but for games, it's only been mediocre. I had a hard time coming up with ten games that came out in 2018 that I cared enough about to put on a list, and in several cases I just ended up thinking, "I spent a lot of time playing this, so I guess I should put it on there." This was a year in which I wondered if maybe I'm just kinda over video games, both as...

Well, we've all had fun here. Though I'm not personally done with the game, not by a long shot, this will be the last entry for "A Jazztronomical Score". From this point on I'm just gunning for the maps most likely to suit my inventory needs, rather than hopping into crazy/dumb maps that are fun to rag on. In a sense, the direction of the game has shifted from messing around to having concrete...

2018 was not a bad year for Japanese music. There was a steady flow of consistently solid tracks for pretty much the entire year, and I added more songs this year to my giant repository of noteworthy music than any year before it. At the same time, however, fewer songs made a great impact on me in 2018. I had a hard time putting together this list, not because I had too many songs to choose fro...

For whatever reason, 2018 felt like the flattest year in Korean music since I’ve started regularly listening to it back in 2013. With the dissolution of groups like 2NE1 and Sistar last year and the lack of new releases from favorites like f(x) and Brown Eyed Girls, combined with a very sluggish dripfeed of actual bangers throughout the year and my overall disinterest in a lot of the bigger rel...

Another year it has been... Another year where I just didn't muster up the strength to do what I want to do, and that is write about videogames. Yet at the end of they year is when I make the exception, even if I myself personally didn't actually play too many new releases this year. 2018 was... a year for me in the space of games. I saw myself bouncing off of AAA titles left and right (bouncin...
