Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Games that are depicted with a predominantly black-and-white appearance, with sequences to this effect, or optional color filters.
Feline animals commonly kept as pets. There are many different breeds and varieties.
Collectibles are items such as coins, rings, gems, packages etc. that can be gathered, usually for some kind of reward, or sometimes to simply beat a level. Often (almost too often) the source of earning achievements and trophies on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
These games let players see the credits without needing to play the game first.
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
The concept of purchasing media and having it delivered over the internet. No physical representation of this content is given, and although the content resides on the user's hard drive they are typically granted a license to the product, rather than ownership of it.
A door that players must go through to exit the level

Not all games are made by dev teams with massive budgets. In fact, some games were made in Adobe Flash before becoming a commercial product.
A staple in both the real-time and turn-based strategy genres, Fog of War simulates the unknowns of the battlefield by covering areas of the map, to be progressively revealed by the player.
The concept of a game referencing another game through mockery, parody or even directly. A game reference to the same franchise does not count.
Graphics in games whether backgrounds or characters that are hand drawn whether using a pen graphics tablet or a scan of a physical drawing.
A hub is the central location from which a player can venture out into different areas of a game. It is often used as a clever way of masking loading between levels or worlds.
A digital storefront which donates some of its profits to charity.
An Iconic concept of video games is the use of an idle animation for the players character, when during gameplay there's no control given. It's an example of emergent game design, and is used as a way to add depth to action characters.
IGF is the Independent Games Festival, an annual gathering of Indie developers. The term also refers to the associated awards.
“Indie” or “independently developed” games are video games which are developed by a studio without the support of an external publisher.
Games in which basic tutorial processes are relayed through environmental elements opposed to, or in addition to, text/speech walkthroughs.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
When the title of the game does not appear immediately at the beginning of the game, but rather after the first mission or prologue.
Games that allow the player to choose which level to play next, rather than a fixed linear order.
Puzzles where light beams must be manipulated in certain ways, usually with a series of mirrors. Popular in action-adventure games.
Basically you're given a flashlight and then sent to a dark place.
These ideas stick to the one or very few gameplay mechanics or appear very barren but usually try to invoke an emotion from the player.
A nocturnal insect closely related to the butterfly.
Sometimes one playable character just isn't enough.
No HUD games are ones that either lack a Heads Up Display, or find a way to integrate it into the game environment. Many games do this to add a sense of immersion or artistic quality to their games, or to reduce screen clutter.
Some games feature protagonists that are not humanoid in nature. These are creatures that do not have human characteristics (i.e. stand on 2 legs, have 2 arms, a body and a head).
