Cinnabar Island

Cinnabar Island is located in the south of Kanto, below Pallet Town and to the west of Fuchsia City. It is reached by two sea routes, Route 20 from Pallet and Route 21 from Fuchsia. The Seafoam Island are the nearest landmass, located off the shore of Cinnabar. Cinnabar is a notable location in the Pokemon franchise as it is on of the only areas in the series to have been destroyed by a natural disaster.

Generation I/III

In Generation I/III Cinnabar is a busy little island town. It is home to the Cinnabar Island Gym, the fire gym. An old mansion and research lab are also found on the island and provide information on the creation of Mewtwo.

Old Manssion The Old Mansion or Pokemon Mansion is an old, burned out and decaying mansion. Apparently a famous Pokmon researcher lived in the mansion before it was destroyed, giving the manse its name. The building has four floors. As the player explores the Mansion, information on its demise is revealed as journals detailing the creation of Mew by the scientists who lived there are found. The scientists succeed in creating Mewtwo from Mew, but Mewtwo destroyed the Mansion and escaped.

Pokemon Lab The Pokemon Lab was founded on Cinnabar by Dr.Fuji, the same Fuji the player rescued in Lavender Town from Team Rocket. Here the player can make a number of trades for new Pokemon from NPC's and also resurrect the fossils found in Mt. Moon. The Pokemon Porygon was created in the Pokemon Lab.

Cinnabar Island Gym

Cinnabar Island is the Fire Type gym. The leader is Blaine. The Gym consists of seven trainers. To progress through the gym, players must not only defeat the trainers but also answer Pokmon trivia questions to unlock doors that block their way. Once Blaines is beaten the player is awarded the Volcano Badge and TM38 Fire Blast.

Generation II/IV

In Generation II/IV the volcano that Cinnabar is built on has erupted and everything except the Pokemon Center destroyed. Blaine has relocated his Gym to the neighbouring Seafoam Islands. The gym no longer contains any trainers or elaborate puzzles, it is just a cave where Blaine stands alone.

Cinnabar is famous as the location where players could encounter the glitch Pokemon MissingNo. MissingNo. could be found after speaking to the old man in Viridian City, then immediately flying to Cinnabar and surfing along the eastern coast.
