The sordid ferryman of the dead in Greek mythology. His boat would herald the newly departed across the river Styx and Acheron into Hades, the Greek underworld.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
After dying, the playermeets Charon in the afterlife. Charon is tasked with ferrying dead across the river Styx, but is massively overworked and has innumerable souls waiting to cross in front of the player. In order to lessen his workload, he gives the player the option to return to life for a cost. If not accepted, he gives the player a number and sends him to the back of the line, causing a game over.
