    Celebrity Tie-in

    Concept »

Games prominently featuring celebrities, who either endorse the game or act as the focus of the story. Games with characters who happen to be played by celebrities are not always tie-ins.

Can anyone name an earlier example of Celebrity Tie-In?

I saw that this page had Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! set as the first appearance of Celebrity Tie-In. But that's not right, Chuck Norris Superkicks came to the 2600 years before that.

Can anyone name an earlier example than Superkicks?

The 2600 game ET was released in 1982, but calling ET a celebrity is a little tenuous since he is not real.

We had this forum discussion about celebrities in games a couple of weeks ago. No-one thought of one earlier than superkicks, and it's definitely the earliest one I can think of.

For some reason, this post made me laugh.

With Journey & Superkicks coming out in the same year, I've been doing release date research into them, and it isn't easy. The only date I've found is for a superkicks double pack with Artillery Dual, which is the 15th of June 1983. Which isn't much help, since Superkicks would have come out before that. And I can't find anything more detailed than the year for Journey. Even this scarily detailed guide to the game doesn't know. IGN lists the release date of both games as the 31st of december, but I'm going to assume that's IGN's stupidity.

So, it seems it's still either superkicks or journey. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

OR depending on how far you want to stretch the definition of Celebrity Tie-in, the 1981 President Elect featured many real world presidents and politicians. Although I think that would be stretching the definition a bit too far, so I think we're still looking at superkicks or journey.

@Jeff: Jeopardy! came out for the NES in 1987 and the host of the show Alex Trebek was in it if that counts as a celebrity tie in.

Yep, That's definitely earlier than Superkicks. I do believe we have a winner.

Yeah.  I can't think of anything else.
