Captain Archibald Haddock is a retired Merchant Navy captain. He is an alcoholic who can't drink anything but alcoholic drinks. He easily gets frustrated and often swears, but his swear words are often original and humorous. Some examples of his swear words include "Bagpipers!", "Bald-headed budgerigar!" and "Fatfaces!". Captain Haddock was introduced the ninth Tintin book as a side character, but soon he surpassed the main character, Tintin, in popularity and had a much more important role in all of the later books. Haddock's aggressive and morally weak character is in clear contrast with Tintin's logical and charismatic character, and this often provides comic relief in the latter books.
