Alternate Form

Something people never tend to enjoy is the idea that character's change. Sure, sometimes it's something simple or just another part of the story, but sometimes the changes are so dramatic, that the character literally takes on another form entirely because of it. Sometimes a character leaves for 'training' or something like that and returns with more power and a new 'look' to go along with it and at others it's something that has put so much mental strain that they act completely different from before. There are even times that magical abilities or artifacts can change a character to frightening, or hilarious, new forms.
