Glad that Ben gave voice to the idea that a person should be able to decide what is best for them and their relationship. The fact that this is somehow a controversial stance is pretty emblematic of how once you reach a certain size people see you as an instrument of the collective and less as an individual like anyone else.

Glad to have Rorie for this one. I just started playing WoW this year, and appreciated hearing them talk about it for a while.

Ben should commit to playing Hollow Knight. I think he'd like it. I agree that it gets better and better as it goes on, but I don't think it takes 10 hours to get there by any means.

Already seen on Reddit about the Ninja stuff. Amazed to see so many people who think its cool to dictate what someone should or shouldn't do on their streams or channels :| I don't think anyone would appreciate it someone telling a person at Giant Bomb what they should or shouldn't do regarding their significant others or families and their exposure to the site :| Trying to shame someone for how they might handle negative exposure about their husband or wife is close to mental illness shaming in my book, especially when we are so far removed from knowing anything about them. I think some people are trying to treat this in a similar light to what VP Mike Pence said and if so its nothing like that, at least in its current form.

Sometimes i wonder if that whole situation with women on Twitch & horny people wanting to fantasize about them, stems from how camgirls were the among the first people out there streaming themselves daily on the internet. That subconsciously being the first connotation that certain people have when they see a girl on a stream. Especially when their streams are set between those of camgirls and pornstars that stream on twitch at the side. I remember when Mia Khalifa started her first stream, it was THE conversation in every stream i had open at that time. The teen hormones were at an all time high. This weird giddiness of people feeling like they're sharing their online room with someone that can be seen naked, and that person now being there to communicate / meme with for a few bucks.

It doesn't help that the whole cheering & donating business that Twitch employs, pretty much started at those camgirl sites. And while someone may give off 0 sexual vibes on a stream, people still hope there might be some of that in the subscriber discord, or the snapchat that you get access to if you subscribe at a high enough tier. It also helps for teens living around their parents that you can hang out on a game focused site like twitch.tv instead of having to go to a camsite to test your smooth talking skills & have your fantasies with girls, instead of having to sneak your way around camgirl sites to get into some anonymous low stake flirting action. There are even sites up that track the 'hottest twitch chicks'.

I guess the idea that you're getting a peek into someone's live and that you get to vigorously live through these people as you would when you follow a reality show daily also helps to foster this weird twitch bullshit.

On Hollow Knight: I still don't understand how people are getting lost without finding Cornifer. Hearing them discuss the map system was somewhat head scratching. Getting the map of the area unlocked is very helpful; but I always found that the trick to not getting lost was simply to pay attention to where I was going. And if I couldn't go back the way that I came for some reason then I'm not lost: I just need to keep moving forward until I reach another place of import. Or a bench.

The ten hour comment was odd, as was the statement that the intro to the game was just smashing bones. Unless that's just a turn of phrase with which I'm unfamiliar; but it didn't sound like it.

That Smash Direct was amazing! It was probably a better showing than anything else this year. There was so much hype and every fan of Smash I know went crazy XD

I don't think I've ever seen a show about 1 game that has been put as much time into. All the bits and stuff. Pretty much half the things they showed were things people wanted but didn't expect. Especially for tournament players they are so hyped. And the other half was confirmation of cool things. Such good vibes.

By the end of the Direct we were all exhausted from cheering. And I'm not even much of a Smash fan. The amount of work that went into this game is insane.

@sammo21: The way I see it, this Ninja guy has been able to become quite successful without the advice of these external people. If he doesn't want women on his stream, then that's his business/personal decision, and there should not be any controversy. If you have a problem with it, then instead give money to a streamer who doesn't think that way. What if someone came to GB and said, you guys are one of the top personality driven websites so you should hire an openly conservative person to represent that demographic. This is kind of what shows like The View do. I'm sure Jeff would be like, "F*ck off, don't tell me how to run my website."

@sammo21: I suppose it's fine to do what he wants on his streams and he's not being specifically misogynistic oe anything, but it is a little weird that his reasoning immediately jumps to (paraphrasing) "I don't want to be thought of as cheating with these women," as if that's the only impression anyone would get of interacting with them. It's really sad that it would ever be interpreted that way, which personally makes me want him to say, fuck what they think I'll do it anyway. But I suppose if it's to protect the sanctity of his family then sure, ok. Not that I could ever understand what these damn millenials are ever doing, anyway. *eyes dan ryckert suspiciously*

@thursday1977: The map system is divisive, but I loved it. New areas were uncharted territory. I paid close attention to where I was going, and where I'd been. Finding Cornifer was always a huge relief. It's weird to hear that people reacted so negatively to it, and it's the type of design choice that a larger studio probably would have focus grouped out of the game. But I'm really glad they didn't.

re: throwaway comment Jeff made an hour or so into the show, YouTube has supported HDR for about a year now. Presumably this was driven by the fact that flagship smartphones like the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy series (S8 onwards) have HDR compatible displays. There are dedicated channels out there as well as loads of game trailers.

Sliders are dope though, you don't just grab one, you get like 3 (or get however many you want, obviously) and they can be different kinds! :O

This place in my hometown will let you mix and match on their happy hour menu. So you can have a couple double smoked bacon cheesburgers (w/aged white cheddar, chipotle aioli, house pickles, leaf lettuce, tomato + onion jam), and then get some turkey/cranberry guys that taste like thanksgiving dinner, or go with the slow roasted brisket (w/blue cheese aioli + crispy fried onions).

I don't hate normal sized burgers, but I feel like there is a place for sliders.

e.They have mini flatbread pizzas & I love the Salsiccia one, the butter chicken varient is bangerang as well.

I making myself too hungry, I have to stop.

@ripelivejam: I can't remember where I heard it but apparently it's common for chat to speculate about streamers lives, especially relationships. I don't even see a point of the chat of the really popular streams, it's all long copypasted nonsense scrolling past at the speed of sound. For esports streams it's even worse.

This stuff even happens on GB, you know. "Brad is quitting" is the memiest, but I've also seen discussions about Gamespot employees quitting to join GB, which I think I read Jeff mention causing management to bother them about it. And of course there's speculations about relationships, too. Does Brad have a kid? Ben keeps saying "partner", is he gay? Are Rorie and Mary Kish going out?

I don't think a lot of that stuff is born from hatred or a desire to bother the people who's programming you're really into, it's just gossip and shipping, but it can still build up and get on the nerves of a public figure. I watch Epicnamebro on twitch, one of the bigger dudes known for streaming Dark Souls, or specifically, for making Dark Souls videos on youtube. Just last week, he deleted almost all of the content on his youtube channel, which he hasn't posted to a lot in two or three years after jumping ship to twitch 'cause it's easier and the chat is simpler to moderate. The reason he deleted it? He wasn't happy with that old content, was part of it. But also, he kept getting messages because of those old videos. "Why didn't you finish this? When is this part coming? This information(from 2012) is outdated!"

And on top of that you get shit-talking and speculation about his family. A lot of viewers looked at him taking down all those videos because of a few bad eggs as overracting, which I can relate to. I don't want anything I read or watch because I love it get disappeared 'cause the creator no longer likes it, and I make a point of making even the shitty stuff I've made remain on the internet because some people might enjoy it. It's sad and frustrating that a creator has literally removed from public space the things I love.

But I am not in the position he is. He's a moderately popular youtuber and twitch streamer, but that means thousands of messages, hundreds of thousands of views, all day every year, and every shitty comment builds up until he's asking himself "Why even bother, when all this does is make me feel bad?" It's not just the people who insults his like five year old daughter who tip that scale, it's every dirtbag looking for an argument or misunderstanding or trolling.

Now imagine one of the world's biggest twitch streamers and how he might feel about his hundreds of thousands of messages, doing all that gossipping and shipping and shit-talking and threatening and trolling. Not just about him, but about his family. People are all different here, I know youtube personalities or whatever that talk about their wives, that use their wives' name, that do streaming/videos/podcasts with their wives or friends or siblings and so on. But in my book what you're comfortable with is up to the individual, and I'm not in any place to judge him for what he does. I have no clue how it feels to be in his position and get shat on all day every day.

"No girls allowed" is a blatantly sexist sentiment that I don't feel good about, but I don't think anyone has a right to come on the stream with some dude. If he sees endless speculation and shit-talking and rumors about his loved ones and notices it gets worse if he does this or that, then I personally can respect him for not wanting to do that. It's not like you cease to be a person just 'cause you made it big, and giving him a hard time over this because he's not "fulfilling his social responsibility" does not sit right with me at all.

Yeah, I'm curious what part people are referring to in Hollow Knight where it gets good. Frankly, I think that game gets really good by about 60-90 minutes in, when you've cleared the boss of the first area and can move on to Greenpath. Greenpath is a legitimately cool area with more colour than the intro to the game, and some intriguing story stuff with the introduction of Hornet.

I'll admit that after that, Fungal Wastes and Fog Canyon are kinda murky and dull, but they're pretty much the last lull in the whole game because every zone past that is pretty rad. Everyone who complains about the game lacking colour and taking hours to get good feels like they're extrapolating way too much from playing the first 50 minutes and only seeing the tutorial, Dirtmouth, and the Forgotten Crossroads.
