Giant Bombcast 545: School Meat

Pretty infuriating to hear them dunk on Hollow Knight when none of them have even played more than ~5 hours. I have about 80 hours into Hollow Knight and 15 into Dead Cells and I'd absolutely recommend Hollow Knight over Dead Cells. Everyone has different tastes obviously but goddamn they're barely acknowledging one of the best platformers ever made.

@savutano: My problem is that I've never found a slider that has an acceptable bread/meat ratio - it is always too high. If I could find a place that stretches the definition of burger to include flatbreads or denser rolls or something I'd be more on board, but the buns they use are too much.

@sixtycakes: Currently playing both games; Hollow Knight is much more involved and requires more attention and concentration, so they occupy different modes for me. I agree, this was pretty obnoxious to listen to given that my opinion of the game has only increased as I've played it, even as it gets more and more difficult. I had the same impressions regarding the environment being flat and barren in palette and enemies, but that changes once out of the very first area. Both games are great, but Hollow Knight definitely has more merit in carrying the torch of metroidvania design, but obviously requires more time to develop as you play. As a roguelike, Dead Cells starts off full-speed in comparison. Tangentially, I'm getting a little put off by the interest gaps in the current GB crew; there's a bunch of neat games I'd like to hear about that are more involved, like strategy games or the like. Obviously hard to do with their formats but it's a shame they personally don't seem to have a ton of interest in that sector, and it's showing more as time goes on since Drew left, for example.

How was "Shades of Asshole" not the title for this week?

I don't get the controversy over Ninja. He's protecting his family. Isn't that the end of the conversation?

@sabeau: Well said - I totally agree. It wasn't really until after Soul Master in HK where I realized the huge scope of the game and couldn't put it down after that. I find the inverse to be true for Dead Cells. It starts out strong but I'm losing interest from having to replay the same levels over and over.

The interest gaps have been particularly obvious with the west coast crew (fighting games anyone?). I was super happy to hear the WoW talk this week and that Brad is giving it a go.

@bisonhero: I didn't really start enjoying the game until I got more mobility options. That's when the game really opened up for me.

I get why Ninja was so forward in saying exactly what he meant, but he should have worded it better. Just keep it vague like "I will be very careful with who I stream with in order to try to curtail the INSERT WAY TO DESCRIBE TOXIC TWITCH HERE."

He should do on his streams what he feels creates the best environment for him, his family, and his non-asshole viewers. But saying it outright like this creates bad headlines, even if it is incredibly easy to understand.

Moral of the story, people (specifically some Twitch viewers in this case) suck and ruin it for everyone.

I surprised that some of the crew would be judgy about Ninjas stance. Most of them don't stream with their girlfriends or wives, aside from Jason. Not exactly apples to apples, but they are making a personal choice about streaming affecting their relationships, just like Ninja.

Don't quote the "2% of..." statement, it refreshes the neurosis and negative viewpoint on a gift.

Ninja can obviously do whatever he wants. I don't see why the GB crew isn't allowed to have an opinion on his approach without getting a "shame shame" in their direction and some lame comparison like "What would you do if people wanted you to stream with more Conservative people". The two things are not even REMOTELY similar and that's about as bad faith argument as I've ever heard.

Re-listening to the podcast and hearing the talk around Doom: Eternal and being reminded what almost everyone at Giant Bomb was saying about Doom before it was released. When one of them said, "People were saying this about the melee kills" what it was is that they were saying those things too lol. I will also say that they clearly had a bunch of lore in place for Doom based on what we see in the game AND the stuff that was revealed in the amazing NoClip documentary.

For anyone curious ,this is the image of the Doom Slayer/Doom Marine with no helmet. I would say he looks more like Howie Long than Superman but maybe that's just me. I have a feeling that with something like that you aren't going to really please anyone. I have 0 reason to think Id won't knock it out of the park. I just hope they don't even bother with competitive mp and just do, maybe co-op, or something.

In my opinion, this looks like a pretty decent representation of classic Doom Guy (which is literally what it is). The battle damage looking one is pretty cool too. I was really expecting them to announce console versions of Quake Champions but it looks like they don't have immediate plans for that.

Now that I have 3 health flasks unlocked in Dead Cells, I'm definitely going to focus more on unlocking weapon blueprints that I have found now. Jesus, this game is so good; as someone who had never played a rogue-lite game previously, this is an absolute must as a starting point for people that are interested.

No, the Doom Slayer set that is on sale in the storefront is the Doom 3 marine. And has the Doom 3 marine head on it (that's the one with the gelled up black hair). Which is another head still than the one from the "classic" marine shown in your post. The one you show is unlocked by collecting all the lore scrolls for the Doom Slayer - and is based on the marine from the first Doom Game (from 1993).

This sucks. Miucin probably developed this habit in college. It's generally called "patchwriting." I taught freshman composition for many years and with the exception of his verbatim copying, that kind of writing glides through TurnItIn no problem. Copying syntax or form is still plagiarism, just harder to detect.

Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories are both Rockstar games that are technically prequels to GTA 3 and Vice City respectively. Lots of character overlaps in both of those.

I get that not everything is for everyone, but as a counter point to Jeff saying he would have a hard time recommending Hollow Knight to anyone I personally am struggling to find the awesome fun everything keeps talking about in Dead Cells. This mostly springs from the fact that I am not a huge fan of procedurally generated levels or run-based games. So if you're anything like me, then Hollow Knight would definitely be a better recommend because you see the progression of moving forward and unlocking new abilities. The combat in Dead Cells is fast and fun, but each time I make it to the first boss and get a bad RNG roll with weapons which makes me wipe, or I make it past the boss but die in the next level, and think about having to get up to that part again it kind of makes me want to stop playing.

It's definitely a fun game, but the randomness of it and forcing you to replay it from start - something I understand a lot of people may enjoy - is definitely not for me and is a huge hurdle in a game I would otherwise be having a blast in.

Let's kinda pump the brakes a bit on having too much sympathy for female streamers on Twitch. I haven't read the Verge article that Brad was referencing but a lot of IRL streamers openly invite the fantasy of availability. They trade on their sexuality in exchange for subscriptions, donations, bits, etc. That fantasy is the entire reason for their channel's existence. Don't wear the the tightest, skimpiest, low cut top with the camera positioned just so and then complain about the audience you've cultivated. By all means, if you're just a normal streamer then anyone with a sense of entitlement to details of your personal life can fuck right the hell off.

Why are they surprised about the RDR2 commentary? Rockstar's done this since the first RDR. GTAV had these kind of videos as well.

I'm surprised at how much of a boner they have for Doom despite how little sense it makes. But are completely dismissive towards RDR2.

I liked Doom, but it was annoying how much they hyped it up throughout 2016, especially during game of the year.

What's with the stupid moaning about Quake Champions showing the Doomguy's face? Are we pretending that Doomguy is like The Stig or something and we've never seen him before? His face is in the HUD in Doom1 and 2, and in the opening of Doom3 they show a close-up. The Quake Champions Doomguy cosmetics where his face is visible are directly based on the original Doom and Doom3 characters.

Damn I forgot about thug pro. Been playing thps 2 and 3 on emulators. Kinda sucks there's no level objectives but I think I'll install and mess with it a little bit again anyway.

Edit: I guess free skate is just not really what I go to thps for. Even with the hundred levels I was bored after 10 minutes. It is really cool to see those old levels in this engine though and it feels really nice to play. If they somehow got those career modes in there this would be the best thing ever.

Hey @brad I think you've got the standard American view of lamb, which I guess is influenced by the name of the meat. Lamb comes from younger animals but it's certainly not the same thing as veal. Whereas a veal calf is at most 24 weeks old and is kept in pretty weird condition, lamb comes from animals of around 7 months old, which is usually a little older than pigs for pork. Cattle for beef are usually considerably older, but that's because they need more time to grow to get optimum meat production.
