I think No Man's Sky is actually pretty close to what they've showed. Yes, there are some minor things that aren't in the game that were shown, but pretty much everything else is about what we expected.

I love No Man's Sky. It really sucks to see people beating it like a dead horse. Also, the character assassination of Sean Murray is atrocious. Video game culture really needs to get past our habit of vicious backlash against any sort of slight.

Whether video game fans willingness to blow miscommunication out of galactic proportions will turn out to be a benefit to consumer rights or the equivalent of the boy who cried wolf has yet to be seen.

We do this so often. Might be easier to not name a specific game and just do something like this for advertisements in general. All advertisements mislead and subvert and it is an issue. Gamers just seem to be more brutal and vicious in response to it.

I was pretty spot on. Pokemon Snap plus trading. Exactly what I was hoping for.

Just spent another few hours yesterday playing No Man's Sky yesterday. Probably going to do the same tonight.

The internet has a way of fueling anger and blowing it out of proportion. Sean Murray is a person and no person deserves the dog pile that he's getting. Even if you feel deceived by him and the Hello Games marketing. He's a human being and created something that might not be for you.

No Man's Sky is really fun and relaxing in its current state. I've done things that that reddit post said isn't in the game so remind yourself that reddit posts aren't gospel. This is a massive massive MASSIVE game and perhaps we haven't seen everything.

@lothars: Besides that whole Reddit list, you know what the game is missing the most? A personality. This game has no personality. Every alien you meet is expressionless. The animals you encounter don't do anything remotely exciting. They couldn't even make your headset voice interesting. If they spent more time giving this game a personality, and less time so focused on their "No two planets are alike" bullshit, this game may have pulled me in.

I disagree completely. The game is overflowing with personality. The monolith stories and lore points are all fantastic and, even though they don't move, the alien encounters are cool and sometimes really funny. I had one where I accidentally accepted an arranged marriage and another where a Korvac bum rushed me and jammed a needle in my head. Going into Atlas stations is super sinister and crazy and every time I do I want to turn around and fly the other way.

The Gek are hilariously evil, the Korvac are cool and smart, the Vykeen are honorable and stupid. Visually, they stand around and look at their iPads (sound familiar to any other species you might know), but if you don't mind reading the game has a huge amount of personality.

@spraynardtatum: Maybe, just maybe, having 120 gajizillion planets wasn't the best idea. Maybe it's unnecessarily big of a number for (at best) a couple million people.

Go broke or go home as they say. I think the shear size is a large part of the appeal.

Anyone who watches pre-release material while regarding it all as promises made and agreements sworn is asking for disappointment.

I'd agree with you if Hello Games didn't show off footage of the game leading up to release. I think of that 2014 E3 trailer that was presented as live gameplay, and the final product doesn't look anything like that. Sean Murray gave gameplay demos that look nothing like the final game.

Compare that to gameplay demos other studios give at E3 and such. A Call of Duty gameplay demo will be representative of the final product.

When the developers are like "you'll be able to get into massive space battles in this game," and then you can't, how are gamers supposed to respond? "Oh well, no biggie, I shouldn't listen to what developers say when talking about their own game!"

I've gotten into massive space battles. I've been fighting again upwards of 20 other ships while I defended a freighter. I agree with you that gamers shouldn't be held accountable but I also think that No Man's Sky backlash is out of control. Let us be reminded that the sacred reddit post that showed all the missing features in the game is just that, a reddit post. Many of the things that it coldly states aren't there might actually show up in one way or another. Patrick did a really good write up where he interviewed the guy that made that reddit post and he said that people have blown that post out of proportion.

[I got] Dozens of messages from people who congratulated me for really sticking it to these 'dirtbag' devs, when that wasn't my intention at all. People were taking the post and using it to fuel their own indignant anger. —Alex

There are certainly things that aren't there that were initially marketed but this is also a game with quintillions of planets and maybe, just maybe, certain other things haven't been found yet. Like I said, I took part in a pretty huge space battle and that's one of the big points that people are getting upset over.
