Finally, the continued whining from some quarters about Dream Daddy being on the staff’s list is making me really depressed. I want GB to reflect the gaming tastes of as many types of gamer as possible (provided they are passionate about what they enjoy), and I think last year’s changes to the staff line-up did an excellent job of expanding things in this regard. Consequently, I would expect the staff’s game of the year list to reflect a wider range of game types than we’ve seen in the past. This is a good thing people, stop being such babies about it!

I agree. I haven't played Dream Daddy, yet, but I have it installed to play in the next few weeks.

I personally like a wide variety of games, and I appreciate when a game resonates with someone passionately. Personally, I think the fact that two staff members felt that way validates it. There have been years when just one person cares about a game, and that feels harder to justify, but I felt a good case was made for Dream Daddy. I had more of a problem with the cases being made for the ranking of the top 5 games, personally. However, the staff list is as subjective as anyone's, so there's no reason for people to get so upset. :)

@johnymyko: Life is Strange: Before the storm was my #2. :) I think it's just one of those games that is all about the story and emotional impact. If those don't hit for a person, there isn't much else to hold onto.

@jdp83 yeah, I agree

@suitsI think that not enough people played Nioh, unfortunately... like me... I want to play it, but I just didn't have time. :(

I'm happy to hear when PUBG doesn't click with other players, because I've been feeling left out since about the middle of last year due to all the people that are REALLY into it. :D

@kindgineer: Thanks for the recommendation. I have tried backloggery, but I just found it hard to keep up with. Instead, I use a Google Doc where I can easily move games around, and I usually separate my games in short (less than 10 hours), medium (10-25 hours), and long (25+ hours), and I try to play no more than 1 game of each at a time and finish a game before starting a new one.

Anyway, yeah, backlogging is a hard thing, especially because I don't have the time to finish the games on my short lists before more and more and more and more games come out. It is just a never ending, growing list... :D

@slag:

After hearing about how many people liked 0 that never cared about Yakuza games before and fans of the series that say 0 is the best or one of the best, I think my experience with 1 was probably just because it was the first, and the series gets better.

Lately, I've been thinking about starting some series with more recent games than earlier ones. For example, I'm going to play NieR:Automata without playing the first game, which, for someone like me, is really hard. However, I feel that if I like Automata enough, going back to the first game will be like reading a prequel. :)

0 is already the prequel, though, in that case, so it makes sense to start there, and if I really loved that, I could probably forgive some of the other games that aren't as developed, if I already have fell in love with a game in the series.

I just know from my experience trying to go through the Metal Gear games in order that it is not always a good idea to go back to the older games, even if there are story/lore reasons to do so...

@slag: Yeah, at this time, in our country, I need games like Wolfenstein as well as games that just make me feel something real and hopeful like Life is Strange, What Remains of Edith Finch, Night in the Woods, Tacoma, Hellblade, Finding Paradise... It's one of the reasons I bought Dream Daddy based on Vinny's thoughts.

In 2018, I'm actually going to be concentrating most of my gaming time to games that focus on more than just adrenaline, aggression, or just loot/mindless progression.

That being said, I'll still fit in games where the gameplay just makes me feel good (stealth) or are maybe just cathartic (which is the adrenaline, aggression, or loot/mindless progression). I just don't want to focus my time on these. :D

South Park was "prioritized" by me because of the humor, as humor often makes me feel better when I'm down. However, yeah, it was more a snack than a meal. That being said, I am looking forward to the DLC that comes out this year, and I will play them.

I have bought so many multiplayer games in the past, always thinking, "This will be the one that gets me into a multiplayer game!" However, they never do. So, I've resisted buying Battlegrounds...

Maybe I'll break down at some point, but there are so many good single-player games to play, and I mostly play for story/lore. :D
