I'm leaving this open today, not out of personal animus towards Bluey (I am, of course, ALWAYS completely impartial) but because I'd like to get more than one vote.
@chamurai: Don't blame your 1-year-old. Children are not alibis. "He was a bad influence on me." YOU DON'T NEED A BAD INFLUENCE! YOU'RE BAD TO THE BONE.
But ultimately the responsibility lies with everyone who voted or chose not to vote. You are just one frog. You don't have the power to damn us on your own. We all go down together.
If nobody else votes we're going to have spent a month playing baby games for the lulz, and I don't even know what this club is anymore or even what it ever was. Battletoads was supposed to be the nadir. Instead it was a waypoint on the route to the bottom, with Lil Gator Game being a false dawn.
So now they are going to finish the single player mode and release that. I have to admit that the not being able to pause thing was a serious issue for me (not that it's a good game in general but I found that incredibly obnoxious and it kept me from wanting to play in short spurts) so I may go back to this and finish it after the update is out.
On the other hand...oof. Imagine getting fired and then having to spend your notice period working on reworking the networking back end of the same horrible game that caused your studio to get shut down and that you've been working on for years and everyone hates. Grim times for those developers, though at least they'll be paid for that work I guess and it gives them more time to job serach while having an income.
Thank you for all your supportive messages.
We are working to release our final update, Game Update 4, that brings revamped Neighborhood and Nest systems, Single Player Pausing, Offline Mode, and more.
We’ll provide additional details soon. Thank you all.
I won both Dread and Prime remastered on my switch, and the cartridges have never entered the system
What contests are you entering where you're winning Metroid games?
Metroid 2 is an interesting beast. It got remade for 3DS AND in an official fan remake, which shows that a lot of people think there's something to it but also see it as pretty flawed. I never got around to it as a kid either even though I owned and really liked the original Metroid (though I never beat it) but I was not a Gameboy fan in general.
I think that some of your thoughts about how these design decisions were intentional and well-considered are possibly giving too much credit. A lot of design during this period was just opaque and teams and budgets were low. The Game Boy was a place for younger designers to cut their teeth and experiment and a lot of stuff was just weird and awkward because we didn't have the decades of experience we do now.
@ll_exile_ll: In THEORY you can produce an AAA quality game in Poland cheaper than in Japan or the United States. And I'm not even saying anything negative about Polish developers, who have made some great games, but rather that while on paper there's cost savings starting a new studio is harder and often more expensive than running or even buying an established one.
We've seen Microsoft start new studios and them have massive delays or produce bad games many times before. Say what you want about Arkane Austin and Tango but they both at least already had infrastructure and pipelines in place and had made good games (Redfall was terrible but prior games were quite good.) Now some developers had left so maybe they would have struggled too, but I bet if you'd kept Tango open you would have gotten a better game faster and even cheaper than the first game from whatever this new studio will be.
