@gattaigames: Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it! Again, apologies if I sounded dismissive or critical in any way. I just find the question of why developers and publishers. big or small, do the things they do to be an intriguing one if for no other reason than to satisfy my own curiosity.

I always wonder what the endgame is for these multiplayer-focused indie games, specifically in such heavily occupied genres like shooters and fighters. Not a criticism or anything, just genuinely curious. Is the goal just to gain some experience? Or is to take an idea, turn it into a game, sell a few copies, and as long as you create a dedicated playerbase, no matter how small it is, consider it a success? Or do some of these developers specifically try to go out and make the next big thing?

I only ask because it seems like such a risky move for an indie studio. Not only because of server costs, but also multiplayer-focused games obviously require other people to play. A year or two from now, regardless of price, why buy it if no one is playing? Whereas a single-player game will theoretically always be playable.

I don't really agree with the accusation that they're shitting on the game/franchise. They poke fun at it a bit and they're clearly not super into it, but it at least seems like they're trying to understand and respect it.

That said, I do agree that they could have done a better job of explaining and showing off what was new and different about this game. However, I'm not really that bothered to be honest because I kinda didn't expect them to anyway. I don't know if this is good or bad, but this video is exactly what I expected it to be. A very very very light overview of DW9 that I can throw on in the background.

Jim Sterling is my goto source for Musou games anyway so I'm waiting to see what he has to say about it.

I can appreciate the clever things Nier does but that game did nothing for me.

My feelings in a nutshell.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: that game does some really cool shit and has some great moments, but when all is said and done, I walked away from it just sorta shrugging shoulders.

Personally, I wish I could go back in time and play it before the discussion surrounding the game blew up like it did. It's impossible to know now if I would have ultimately felt any different about it, but I do know i went in with probably higher-than-normal expectations because of all the buzz.

I love a lot of what Platinum has done and I at least played Drakengard 3 so I don't feel like I'm a stranger to Yoko Taro, but the game just fell flat to me at every turn. Well, minus the forced walking, I still love the beginning of route C, but that's about it. No other major part of that game resonated me in anyway.

Saying the story in Nier Automata is merely "okay" shows a severe lack of both critical thinking and understanding of the overall message of N:A.

I hate this type of thing so much and it's part of the reason why it's hard for me to take this game seriously sometimes. It does some really cool shit in some really cool ways, but this deifying of Yoko Taro and overblown hype do just as much harm as good.

Saying it's just okay "shows a severe lack of critical thinking"? What the shit? How about saying it's just okay simply means they just didn't like it? As if understanding Nier: Automata suddenly equates to loving Nier: Automata. I wrapped my head around the game just fine - it's very smart, but not as deep as it's sometimes made out to be - but I didn't love it.

Maybe that's my fault because I listened to too much of the hype before I played it, I dunno. But it wasn't for me the life-changing experience it's made out to be. For me, it's just okay.

edit: And for the record I also think the music in this game is phenomenal. Though I might give the edge to Persona or Gravity Rush for personal reasons, Nier is just as deserving.

Everyone who mentions Gravity Rush this year are among my new favorite people. Bonus points for FFXIV. Stormblood knocked it out the part with music this year.
