I had horrible visions of Vinny trying to enter the atmosphere with a full tank of Xenon because I thought they were going to try and slow their descent with it. After seeing it turn into a fireball a few kilometers ahead of them, I'm glad they decided to jettison it.
"...and more than that, I'm hoping that it has at least some degree of backwards compatibility with the Wii U."
I highly doubt the next Nintendo thing (whatever that may be) will be backwards compatible. Despite the fact that it's severely underutilised, they'd have to find some way to incorporate a touch pad (especially if Mario Maker, something I'm sure they recognise as key, hopes to survive the jump), which I don't think they'll do, given the contention surrounding that controller.
For me this is another New Nintendo 3DS. I just got my PS4 in October. If this actually happens I'm sure as fuck not buying it. With how much money this generation costs already (It's $80 CAD for a new game now because of the goddamned exchange rate), and frankly how few games of superior quality there are being offered, it simply isn't worth staying current anymore.
I genuinely love Crash 3 and CTR, and everything else I've played of it has been awful. I'm not sure how there could be that level of disparity for a single instance of a series. Going back now, Crash 1 and 2 were a pretty linear evolution towards 3, but after that one pinnacle it crashed again. (Yes, of course I did that on purpose).
