Overview
Pinstripe is the first commercial title by indie game developer Thomas Brush, released under his studio Atmos Games, and published by Armor Games Studios. Everything from the music to the art and coding was made by Thomas himself over the course of five years. While the gameplay blends puzzle-solving with action and platforming elements, it is meant primarily to be a narrative experience with a blend of surreal humour and horror. It is inspired by classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, and Coraline. The game releases on Steam on April 25th, 2017, in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese-Brazil, Russian, and Simplified Chinese.
Plot
Teddy, a disgraced ex-minister, and his daughter, Bo, are on a train, exploring, when they have an encounter with an unnerving individual in one of the cars. When Bo runs off on her own later, Teddy chases her down only to see her be abducted through a mirror. When Teddy gives chase, he finds himself in a bizarre and dangerous frozen version of the afterlife, where he must journey through Hell to save her, and ultimately confront his past.
Gameplay
Players control Teddy with the keyboard, running and jumping around areas, and eventually aiming and shooting a slingshot at enemies or switches using the mouse. As they explore, they will come across puzzles and other obstacles they will need to overcome, ranging from timed jumping trials to code-cracking and more. Teddy will also eventually be joined by his dog, who can help sniff out and dig up clues. The way the player chooses to respond to various characters will have an influence on the tone during the game's ending.
History
Thomas Brush began work on Pinstripe over five years ago as his first commercial project after the success of his free Flash indie games, Coma and Skinny, which were praised by critics and players alike. Everything except the voice-acting is done by Thomas Brush alone, including the original score. A Kickstarter for additional funding and to allow Thomas to focus on completing the game full time was launched in February of 2016 and met its goal within the first day.
