    The M7 submachine gun is a UNSC-issued, gas-operated weapon capable of continuous fire. The substantial kickback necessitates that the user constantly readjust their aim during sustained fire. When wielded two at a time, the SMG becomes particularly deadly.

    A rapid-fire weapon, affectionately referred to by Bungie as the "bullet hose", a dual-wielded pair of SMGs was the apparent replacement for the assault rifle in Halo 2. The SMG was also available in Halo 3, but due to the addition of a new assault rifle, it became much less popular. A special silenced variant of the firearm is the signature weapon of the Rookie, the protagonist of Halo 3: ODST.
