I think I'm going to stop playing Dark Souls for now and give Vanquish another go. I have most if not all of the highly acclaimed PlatinumGames' games, but somewhere along the way, I've always lost interest in playing them. Vanquish (which I played more of the demo than the actual game), Bayonetta and its sequel (I never played two), Nier: Automata which I played perhaps ten to fifteen hours of, and MGS: Rising which I played the first level of and quit. I should remedy all of this starting with Vanquish; I know a lot of them are great games that should be played. Is anyone going to try this out on the One? What were all of your thoughts on Vanquish and where does it stack in the pantheon of PlatinumGames' games?

For me Vanquish is below Bayonetta (1&2) & MGR but above all of Platinum's other games. I wish they werent as stingy with the energy you need for sliding around and the levels were more open to allow for that but it's still a really fun albeit short game.

@boozak: I played it for a couple of hours. I generally go easy difficulty then if I liked a game (and sometimes even if I didn't) I'll go through it on the hardest. I just started the game on hard and I found it to be enjoyable. It's not as challenging as I thought it was going to be though, but it's good. I don't think it's amazing like some feel it is, but it has some interesting moments with levels. The game just feels like a faster paced Binary Domain to me. I don't know how far in I am, but before I quit I just got to the next checkpointing area where you go above a lift after you defeat the two large bosses. I would have kept going but I think my dog is having issues so I turned it off to be with him.

    Best Platinum-ass Platinum Games:

    1: Bayonetta (T)

    1: Revengence (T)

    1: Vanquish (T)

    4: Bayonetta 2

    5: Transformers Devistation

    6: Everything Else / Who Cares (T)

I LOVE Nier: Automata, and it would be up there with Bayonetta, Revengence, and Vanquish, but I just don’t see it as “a Platinum game.” It doesn’t have their usual sensibilities, design, polish, etc.

@ntm: Hard mode is managable and feels fair it's "God Hard" (In reference to God Hand, another one of Mikami's games) where things feel a bit cheap. I didnt find the controls to be as sublime as people sometimes describe them but the thing I really like and I wish other shooters adopted is basically being able to cancel out of any animation, whether it's through rolling, sliding or changing your weapon theres always a way to keep the action going and to dodge attacks effectively. It's small things like getting in and out cover and interacting with objects that just dont feel as smooth as the rest of the game. It's something that could easily be fixed in a sequel that we'll never see though...

All you need to know, back compat probably won't improve the resolution, and definitely won't improve the frame rate.

@cikame: Obviously it's not going to match the PC port but the XBO version of Bayonetta did have an improved framerate and no screen tearing. (which was frequent originally)

@boozak: Bayonetta originally had a frame rate limit of 60, Vanquish is 30, that's why the PC port is such a big deal.

Finally, was in the middle of this game but at least now I don't have to switch inputs! (Binary Domain would be good next!)

Its not my favorite platinum game (mainly because of the bosses which I don't like much at all). Still a lot of fun.

@cikame: I know, i'm not saying it's going to increase the cap I'm just saying it may not dip as much. (I'm not sure if it did before but Bayonetta certainly did)

@cikame: I didn't play much of it on the 360 so I don't remember. As for it being backward compatible, expecting it to be a higher resolution for any game is unlikely, especially on the base Xbox One. There are only a select few games that are enhanced with better image quality in that respect and only on the X. A lot of games do retain a steadier frame rate and sometimes when the game has an unlocked frame rate it will have a noticeable framerate boost over the original version. They also eliminate screen tearing. That said, I noticed that Vanquish in at least one cutscene had terrible screen tearing on the upper half of the screen. I'm not sure what was up with that. It runs fine and looks fine. Some good use of motion blur.

@boozak: Hmm. I was curious if there was another difficulty. I probably won't play it. Once through is good enough I feel. From the little I've played, it's enjoyable but I can already see that I don't need to experience it further in terms of a new playthrough.

I loved Vanquish. In an age of slow, plodding cover-based shooters, it found a way to get you moving quickly between pieces of cover and in a way that felt exhilarating.
