Music in videogames as always been a key part of the overall experience and eventual joy we obtain from this wonderful form of entertainment. From the classic 8-bit tracks of old to the unforgettable orchestral scores of today, it's clear that music as played a huge part in both videogames and our own childhood. Now I know there are many 'top 10' lists out there, but to be totally honest with you I've never done one myself and I actually didn't want to create a specific 'top 10' list because I honestly don't put such things in such a specified list like many of my fellow gamers do. I just like the music, I don't feel like I need to create a list to show you which is my all time favourite because I don't have one. I just have certain themes I adore and wish to share with you here. Now I suspect I won't get all of them in this simple small blog but maybe I'll do another in the near future, of course you may not agree with all of the choices. If I'm totally frank with you, I didn't want to have to many of the classic themes we all know and love. For instance the Mario or Legend of Zelda themes. Now these are much loved but not my personal favourite, most of the tunes I enjoy usually for the most part played a pleasant part in my childhood. So I hope you find something you like in this small list.Tomb Raider Theme
A stunning piece of music, I remember this fondly as a kid playing on the Playstation console. Now at that age I found the game to be both frustrating and beautiful, it's simply of the most outstanding videogame titles to appear on the system and the beauitful Lara Craft deserves the rise back to fame her games are currently getting. Bravo Miss Croft.
Kingdom Hearts 2 (Opening Theme)
It's fair to say that this isn't to everyones tastes, but it's a fantastic opening to a great game. Despite it feeling a little to disney songwise, I recall getting goosebumps when I started playing KH2 and heard this song for the first time. The song is called Sanctuary by Utada Hikaru and there is also a Japanese version to be found by the same artist called Passion. It's a fantastic tune and a great way to get you in the mood for more Kingdom Hearts. Of course we should not forget the song was also listenable backwards, click here to hear the fantastic backwards version of the theme song.
Eternal Sonata Soundtrack - Pryoxene of the Heart
For me personally, Eternal Sonata was one of the best games to be released in 2007 and this is coming from a gentleman who believes Japanese RPG's have had their day. Anyway, this beautifully tune from composer Motoi Sakuraba would be high on my top 10 list of Videogame theme songs if I did indeed create one. It still gives me goosebumps and is both a sad but trully beautiful tune. Infact I could pick from a whole lot of fantastic tunes from the Eternal Sonata Soundtrack, of course the great Chopin's classics performed by Stanislav Bunin are also to be found in the collection. If you have never played Eternal Sonata, please do it's a stunning game that I believe is soon to be released on the Playstation 3.
Final Fantasy X - To Zanarkand
I'm pretty sure this would be on a lot of gamers lists of classic Videogame Music, but to be totally honest here. I'm not a huge fan of the music in Final Fantasy games, I'm not sure it's taste or the actual games themselves. But this piece from the great Final Fantasy X is a classic in my opinion and one of the best Final Fantasy songs to date. It's simple but also beautiful, and is a great example of the impact videogame music can have.
Halo Theme (Original)
And I mean the ''ORIGINAL'' because despite the popularity of the newer Mjohnir Remixed version, I still think the original is far far better. It's also fair to say that the original theme song matched the classic original Halo game on XBOX. I personally think the Halo series as had it's day, that or it needs a brand new developer to take the reigns. But no one can forget this tune, it's as reconiseable as the Mario Bros theme or the Zelda theme is to the world now. The Monk singing adds an epic feel to the overall tune and only adds to the excitment as you go around punching aliens with your pistal.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Theme
Short but oh so sweet, the last on this small list is one of my favourite. It is indeed short but also a classic tune from a game I dearly love. It's just sad that LucasArts looks like it's about to destroy the series and take the money as KOTOR goes Massive Multiplayer Online. But at least we still have the two previous games to enjoy, and indeed with a fantastic soundtrack to help us along. Very Star Wars, but also very unique in it's own way.
I might do more of these in the future, you may or may not find them of any interest whatsoever but I do. So if I anymore classic tunes come to my head then I will indeed be creating a new list to show you some of the great tunes I'm fond of.
