As I got towards the end writing this I forgot I had so many things to plug! First I'd like to tell all of you I got to interview Pete Hines from Bethesda about Fallout 3. It's a pretty general interview, didn't want to get into specifics otherwise I would've been talking to him all day. There's some interesting stuff about downloadable content near the end, and maybe there's some obvious facts that you've just glanced over and haven't heard of till now. Well listen to it anyway. There's going to be an offcial News Story link tomorrow, instead of just a direct download link.

And my Dead Space Review is up on TalkXbox. I forgot to add images to it though, so hopefully you can manage through the bland text. So those are my professional thoughts on that game. Tell me what you think. Anyways, back to the original blog:

Two pick ups this week:

We got the F2s this week. Fable II and Far Cry 2. Both original games (Far Cry and Fable) came out in 2004, so it's been four years since either franchise has had a new installment. I loved the first Far Cry and hated the first Fable. What's strange is that I'm enjoying Fable 2 a lot more than Far Cry 2. I guess that's not a fair comparison since Far Cry 1 and Far Cry 2 have two total different game design ideas, and different developers, but whatever. I was really surprised with how much I'm enjoying Fable.  I've only played Far Cry 2 for around an hour and I just finished the tutorial, and Fable 2 I've sunk two or three hours into, but regardless. Let's do some bullet point impressions:

Fable II

  • Boring first impression, I hope to god being a kid in Fallout 3 isn't nearly as dull
  • Probably the least funniest game I've ever played in my life. It's lame childish Irish humor, I don't know how to explain it. It's just really not funny
  • The dialogue in general is abysmal. It's like if you've ever played a game that has English translated voice work, and it's just so bad you can't even understand what's going on in each scene. That's how Fable II is, all the time. But this game was designed in English, so what the fuck? Makes me think of Chaos Wars
  • Entrepreneurship side activity seems awesome. There's no actually "Entrepreneurship" mini game, but you can buy shops and get a little bit of profit, or buy houses and rent them out to people, and you can jack up, or lower the price of the rent for all your properties. Obviously I'm too early in the game to buy most of these, but it's cool that it's there
  • They accurately represented how work is in real life: Really boring, but worth the cash you get
  • I'm being the biggest dick possible. Quick example: At the beginning you're given the key to a slave's cage, the slave owner asks for the key to keep them imprisoned, and the slaves want to be freed. Obvious good and evil choices right? Well I gave him the key, then murdered him right afterward, took the key, freed the slaves, killed both of them. That's how I roll. Anytime I see a Civilian alone in an alleyway, they die, I killed a Monk earlier today just because he was by himself.
  • Camera seems slow
  • Controls in general are ehhh
  • Battle system seems massively improved, although magic at this point appears useless
  • Trail of seeds system is annoying as fuck, navigating around town is impossible, the map in the menu is useless, and that's all you get.

Far Cry 2

  • Terrible first impression. Intro car ride is really boring, opening isn't that much better
  • Controls are retarded. I'm not going to say the game is bad. The Darkness had AWFUL controls if anyone recalls, but that game was ok. So far i'm having a lot of trouble just shooting guys
  • Graphics are really unimpressive, I think they look worse than the first Far Cry
  • Cars break down too often, why is every car broken?
  • I have Malaria
  • Similar to Assassin's Creed and Brothers in Arms, Ubisoft continues to have a shitty promotion deal with Best Buy.

Well those are my quick impressions. As I said I can't really say much for Far Cry 2, cause I haven't played it much. Everyone is giving it great scores so I'm sure it'll be grand near the tail end, but Fallout 3 comes out next week and I don't know if I'll be done with these games by then. Tomorrow Doug Buffone, Tom Bowen, and I will be discussing Fable 2 on our weekly podcast, so stay tuned for that if you want out opinions. I know Doug is a big fan of the game, so we'll see how our ideas conflict.
