E3 Quick Impressions: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

In fairness, I think this game is still pretty early. At least, I hope so, because it seems like kind of a step back from Twilight Princess. In fairness, I think this game is still pretty early.  At least, I hope so, because it seems like kind of a step back from Twilight Princess.  Twilight Princess took a lot of heat for being a GameCube game that was ported to the Wii, and not a Wii originals, but Wii originals tend to be very simplified, and is that what we want from a Zelda game?  In fairness, it was only a 10-minute demo, but for the most part it seems like it's making far too big a deal out of being able to swing the sword vertically or horizontally.  Most enemies can only be damaged one of those ways, or shift between the two.  It already started to feel tiresome before my 10 minutes were even up.   Graphically I felt like it could have been an N64 game.  It just looked simple and plain.

So what did I actually do in the demo?  Just walked around hitting things with my sword.  I went into a cave and fought a giant skeleton.  I cut plants to get rupees and hearts.  I couldn't jump, but I could climb things, and could get a running start to climb things that would otherwise be too tall.  I blew up a wall with a bomb.  I hit a projectile with my sword so it went back and damaged the monster that fired it.

Here's hoping the full game, when it's released, has more complexity and innovation.
