Had some coin in my pocket and picked up a PS3 this week. I'd owned one previously for a year or so but dropped it off at the folks' place one holiday visit and never looked back. Now that The Last of Us , GT6 , Last Guardian and potentially Persona 5 are on their way, it seemed like as good a time as any to jump back in. Got a PS2 late in the game as well, around the time of Final Fantasy XII,...

Looking back, there's been some stone cold jams in the video games this year. I mean there usually is, but this one feels like a real standout. From the chippy to the dramatic and everything in between, here's a 100% comprehensive list of 2012's hottest tracks, both original and licensed: FTL OST - Space Cruise (Title) FTL OST - Civil (Explore) Best original! Fez OST - Adventure Fez OST - Beaco...

(no ME3 spoilers). I'm trying to think back to the first time I was genuinely disappointed as to how a video game wrapped up. Sitting there as the credits rolled in, questions left unanswered, festering in silent resentment. Or maybe just aching to get it over with, stumbling again and again with a sequence that's been going on far too long to do anybody any good. It happens all the time in oth...

*falls off cliff* "OH so that's how it's gonna be Dark Souls? You're just going to fuck me like that, aren't you? Make some easy enemies rage up on me, fall off a cliff, lose all my bloodstain souls? There was at least a few levels worth in that thing. Well guess what, I'm shutting you off. HA. Who wins now Dark Souls? Me. I win now." [30 Minutes Later] "Well I could probably grind on some guys...
I got these playing cards I found myself with some extra coins in my pocket so I went down to the Gamestop and purchased a 3DS. It's not something I particularly wanted right now but definitely felt like something I'd want to have sooner or later. The actual device is slicker than I expected, even if it carries some of the rustic charms of the phat DS. The screens are large and inviting though...
Man, Dragon Age 2. So many flaws, but with just enough of BioWare's satisfying Adventure/RPG mechanics to be worth playing. I guess I like it. Clearly it could have used another 6 months to a year's worth of development time, the problems bug me to the point that I feel the need to dissect them in list form. I could have sworn we've been here before Excessive dungeon and location reusage. The a...
Ah, January. The perfect time to sit back, relax with a cup of cocoa, and revisit the games I never got around to over the holiday season. And also a time to rekindle my torrid love affair with World of Warcraft. Here's what's been on my plate as of late: World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Anno 1404: Dawn of Discovery Trauma Team Battle Fantasia Fallout: New Vegas Back to the Future: The Game DJ Max...
So, Whiskey Media subscriptions. Yeah I put in my share, these guys have more than earned it and I want to support the site staying the way it is/getting better instead of moving into an ad soaked, page click oriented mess. I don't pay for things like cable that I'd rarely use, so I'll gladly support GB which I check every day for the price of two months of TV. Happy to contribute, no perks nee...
Steam's summer sale is here, time to click buttons and buy more stuff! Tried to only pull the trigger on great deals this time to maximize my $$ and also to hopefully discover something new. Here's my purchases, their price points and general impressions: Flotilla $2.50 Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon Haven't gotten to play it yet but I know I will soon, seems perfect for travel on the netboo...
A good dozen plus hours into the Red Dead Redemption by now, 6 or so missions into the second area. A few thoughts (minor spoilers): Pardner. The open world wild west setting is really working for me, they hit all the right notes. It's a game is packed full of little details, beautiful vistas and sweeping atmosphere. Not perfect though - expect minor pop in, texture and framerate issues at time...
Really digging the new Giant Bomb quest system so far. Really enjoying that I'm about to get some more points right about... now.
As great as the cities in Mass Effect 2 can be, there's something missing that bugged me in the first game and bugs me in this one as well. No children, No fat people. Very few old people too. Where's all the little alien and human kiddies? Maybe not in a scummy place like Omega, but surely in the Citadel you'd see some younglings scurrying about somewhere, just waiting for a space hero to come...
Last night I got a pretty nasty urge to seek out a DJ Max Technika machine and ended up stumbling upon something that probably should have been on my radar a long time ago - the Chinatown Fair Video Arcade, appropriately located in the Chinatown district of New York City. Online research yielded descriptions such as "dark," "dirty," "crowded," and "reeking of body odor" - most agreed that it's...
I'm talking about Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story , the next in a now long line of RPG's to feature the brothers and probably Nintendo's flagship DS title for the holiday season. Each of the three handheld titles have seen near universal acclaim from critics, lauding the great writing, varied gameplay mechanics and interesting mix of interactive battles and puzzle/platform level design. So...
-mad spoilers- So I finished Assassin's Creed II last weekend and it's really been stewing with me, can't seem to shake it. A great amount of fun to play for sure, it kept me engaged and up late from start to finish. But after thinking about it a bit, what really put things over the top for me was the deliciously memorable ending sequence. The game just throws payoff after payoff at you, satisf...
I have so little time to play games these days as it is I should probably be doing that now instead of writing this. Especially since I've been picking up a bunch of these new releases, dabbling for a bit and knowing that eventually I'll get back to it - but damn if the next one isn't more engaging than the last. Nothing super revolutionary but so much genre refinement, enjoyable characterizati...
Borderlands Uncharted 2 PixelJunk Eden Brutal Legend Half-Minute Hero Flipnote Studio With Demon's Souls on hold for now. Videogames!
Bit early for restrospectives and there may be more on the way deserving of this list, but here they are so far. Maybe I should visit my local GameStop, where I can buy and sell used games! Saint's Row 2 - I just could not get into this game. Star Ocean: The Last Hope - Just really mediocre in every way except for combat. Couldn't get more than a few hours in. Far Cry 2 - It felt like just anot...
It's old news now. Anticipated and most likely ready-for-release games have been getting delayed, pushed back, strategically placed, etc. into early 2010 with new announcements seeminlgy by the day. Or they were already scheduled to arrive in early 2010 in order to avoid the holiday rush altogether. Meanwhile I just picked up Sacred 2 because *nothing* worth playing seems to be getting released...
is for Anno 1404 . It doesn't seem like it's for sale in the U.S. but it comes complete with: -Anno 1404 game DVD -Exclusive bonus DVD -72-page art book -A panoramic poster -Old-fashioned compass -A bag containing 6 almond seeds -Wood and leatherbound box And it's currently in stock on Amazon.co.uk for £ 29.99, which is around $42.00. I'm trying to pick one up now, doesn't seem like they want t...
I just finished pirating* through the first episode from Tales of Monkey Island , a worthy addition to the series and one that I can't wait to continue over the next few months. It has the potential to be Telltale's most enjoyable title yet when all is said and done. It's also got me in the mood to play through the original once again, which will happen soon enough over Live Arcade. Not bad for...
And for my third handheld post in a row, the iPhone. Or rather the iPod touch, which is my iDevice of choice for browsing around the App Store. The best part about this whole iPhone gaming thing is the sheer values you can find - there's plenty of free and $0.99 titles worth taking a look at, plus daily price drops and sales to make those impulse buys go down easier. It's a system that still ha...
I'm slowly growing to hate Rhythm Heaven. Great game and all - super addicting, fun to play, lots to unlock. And the music isn't bad taken at face value. But oh man, if you get some of those songs/riffs/lyrics stuck in your head they just wont.. go.. away. Sometimes it's not so bad if one of the more enjoyable tracks starts repeating in my mind (ie. Karate Man or Love Lab) but right now, I can'...
I usually play handheld games just to hit up something different every so often, to scratch that in-the-palm-of-my-hand gaming itch that consoles can't provide. Rarely do I actually bring them along with me as entertainment while I travel around the city, an iPod or similar device works just fine for that. I would probably play my DS more on the subways if it weren't so crowded, and I get annoy...
So I've picked up Persona 4 again after taking a little break from the game, in big part to the GIant Bomb crew playing through the game themselves. It's the month of October now for me and the story is moving along nicely. I have my full party and 3 or 4 max social links, and it's all been entertaining throughout. My stable of personas is formidable, I'm around level 52 or so. I love the game...
note: There's plenty of games I didn't get a chance to play extensively, hence they're not on my list. Metal Gear Solid IV, Little Big Planet, Dead Space, No More Heroes, Far Cry 2, PixelJunk Eden, Wipeout HD, Boom Blox, Patapon, NHL 09, and Valkyria Chronicles off the top of my head. Onward to the rest! 1. Fallout 3 (360/PS3/PC) UFO V.A.T.S. vault 112 (spoilers) Mass Effect was my game of the...
6. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (PS2) review gameplay I'm only around halfway through this game and I may never even finish it, who knows. But it's clear this is the best JRPG of the year and it's become one of my favorite games on the PS2 overall. It's a better game than Persona 3 technically and I prefer the characters and overall tone in P4 as well. The presentation, music and style is unli...
11. Rez HD (360) gameplay Q? Entertainment consistently puts out innovative titles that fit my tastes perfectly, I'm a sucker for everything they've done but Rez is extra special. The sound design, striking visuals, and hypnotic gameplay add huge amounts of replayability to the game, It's fun to return to even for just a few short minutes. Art gaming meets comfort gaming, I guess. I played thro...
16. Civilization Revolution (360/PS3) gameplay Firaxis delivered in 2008 with a long awaited Colonization update and a rethinking of Civ that plays less like the epic PC series and more like the greatest board game ever created. Games move along at a brisk pace and the controls are simple and intuitive for such complex mechanics. The concept and basic mechanics of Civilization are there, though...
Is DJ Max Fever, hopefully dropping in early January. Finally this series is coming to the states, and having never imported Portable 1 and 2 everything in Fever will be fresh for me. This has always seemed like a perfect game for the PSP - beautiful, challenging, and frustrating but ultimately fun even if you only spend a few minutes with it. Love the soundtrack for the previous two games from...
So Spore.. yeah. Not so much. I purchased (no pirating here!) and played it quite a bit through the weekend, and after spending some time with the game you can put me firmly in the camp of those who appreciate the ideas behind Spore but find so many faults and missed opportunities in the game that it's hard to enjoy as a whole. The camera control is awkward. The interface is dated and the art d...
I have a recurring problem with my gaming habit at times, and that is impulse buying things which I know will have little redeeming value in the long run, but god damn I just have to own that shit right now regardless. It happened with the Wii, which I picked up at the Penn Station K-Mart simply because it was there. It happened with a number of XBLA titles like Heavy Weapon, Teenage Mutant Nin...
Giant Bomb, eh? Not bad, not bad at all. In fact, this has the potential to be a pretty amazing gaming website when all is said and done, whenever that may be. Which is to say never, and the concept behind a site like this is very appealing to me and the main reason I see myself sticking around for the long haul. Start with the proven wiki format for generating massive databases of stuff, fuel...
