The Next Generation involves a lot of waiting....

(This is not a review, this is just my first few days with the PS4 summed up into a small post.)

With the launch of the PS4, the next generation of gaming has started. It's an exciting time, filled with pretty graphics, new features and big launch games. But, as previous console launches have had, there are also issues and problems. From some hardware failures to some stinkers of launch games, the PS4 launch has been rocky. This new generation of console has added a new problem though: Waiting..and more waiting.

When I bought a PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3 I did not have any real internet to speak of. Those consoles did just fine with out a connection to the internet. But it seems those days are long gone.

I turned on my PS4 and was greeted to a update screen..then an install screen.Which lead to a black install screen, and more waiting..

After that the console reset.Then I was asked to login to the PSN, which failed. And failed and continued to fail for a few hours.

No Resogun for me, so sadly, with no PSN store, I popped BF4 into my console and decided to see how BAD the single-player is.

But before I could I would have to do an Install...so I had to wait a bit. After that I started my campaign and ran right into a rather long loading screen. Finally I was in the game. It was pretty, I was enjoying the pretty-ness of it. This was neat, seeing a game look this good on a console.

After BF4, I popped in NBA 2K14 which gave me a much better look at next gen gaming. After popping it in and hitting "Start" at the PS4 menu it took less then 5 minutes for me to play. I was limited to the Spurs and Lakers, there was no music or commentary, no menus or anything really, but I was playing a next gen game- and it looked pretty good.

Suddenly a crash. I did discover the PS4 has a crash report system built in, that's nice. It's also a screen I see a lot when I try to play Battlefield 4. Infact, as I write this I still wait for a patch to fix a pretty big issue I'm (and others) are running into. Every-time I hit the options button at the title screen the game crashes out. So, that's fun.

Finally, I was able to access the PSN. Which meant I was able to download Resogun, and with that I found my favorite PS4 game. Simple, fast and gorgeous - Resogun is the "Geometry Wars" of the PS4 launch. That's not a bad thing, its a great thing. Plus it supports online co-op and a robot chick talks to you through your control. SONY wasn't lying, Greatness did Await.

As for other games, I waited to download ALL of Warframe...which is a fun if strange co-op shooter/slasher thing. I'll play it more, but I'm not hugely impressed. Contrast is bad, but neat looking. Blacklight is a fun f2p shooter, that at the moment just flat out doesn't work. Matches lag, or drop randomly. Menus lock up, frame-rate drops randomly, etc. They have announced patches, but as of now its a fun game that doens't work. DCUO is DCUO. Which is probably good for fans, but its nothing to go crazy for.

Thats the extent of what I have played on PS4, nothing crazy good. Games seem unstable, PSN is still acting up a bit, and launch game servers seem to be barely working. And when everything does work, its nothing crazy impressive. Certainly nothing worth buying one for thats for sure. And if you do buy one in these next few weeks, well be prepared to wait..

You will be spending a lot of time waiting...waiting...waiting....
