Kingdom Hearts III

1. Kingdom Hearts III

I tried KH3 as someone who fell off the series, and this game just reminded me of why I did so. The Disney worlds are fantastically realised and the music is excellent, but the story is just complete nonsense and the storytelling itself is even worse, with poor cutscene direction and hammy, insipid dialogue. There's a beautiful scene at the beginning of the Tangled world, lifted from the movie, where Rapunzel is rapidly jumping between excitement and terror at leaving her tower, and the storytelling in that segment alone is more impressive than anything Square Enix has added. To be honest, if you want a Disney fix then stick to the movies. The gameplay itself is fine but pretty shallow and nowhere near enough to make up for the narrative failings. The Gummi ship segments are pretty neat though. 3/5

Apex Legends

2. Apex Legends

Apex Legends is already pretty impressive. It takes the excellent core mechanics from Titanfall, puts you in a well designed map and smartly encourages teamplay by adding intuitive features to help strangers work together. I normally wouldn't dream of autofilling a squad with random players in a Battle Royale game, but here it's pretty good. To have a F2P game that is so polished and feels so good is enough innovation to get me playing.

Crackdown 3

3. Crackdown 3

[Game Pass] [PC] No, Crackdown 3 is not innovative, groundbreaking or anything like what should be expected quality-wise from its lengthy development time. No, the destruction is not anything like what was originally shown (as if I care). And no, Crackdown 1 hasn't aged that well, and graphics aside this could easily be confused for a remaster of that. But I'll be damned, this game is fun. The core gameplay mechanics are trivially simple yet have no right to remain as entertaining as they are after hours of play. The weapons are hilariously overpowered, but that just makes the game more fun. And the orb system to increase your agent's abilities is simple yet addictive and offers one of the best demonstrations of the value of player feedback, with the satisfaction of seeing great gushes of orbs flowing into your character as you skill up. Perhaps it's nostalgia talking, but I've had a lot of fun with the game even as I recognise that it's not amazingly good. It might not be worth full-price, but it was definitely worth my time. 3/5

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

4. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

A welcome return to classic AC after 11 years following the still pretty good Assault Horizon. The story is garbage and frankly ridiculous at times, but it doesn't actually detract from the game that much and the missions are incredibly fun. 4/5

Metro Exodus

5. Metro Exodus

Far Cry: New Dawn

6. Far Cry: New Dawn

It's more Far Cry 5! It's interesting to go back to the same map all messed up and the core gameplay is still fun, but I think I preferred the base game. The story is not all that interesting and some of the characters are not well done at all. 3/5

The Occupation

7. The Occupation

It's a shame the game doesn't quite work as they wanted as The Occupation is a really interesting concept and there's clearly a lot of love and thought that has been put into it.

We. The Revolution

8. We. The Revolution

Tropico 6

9. Tropico 6

Tropico 6 is sort of a best hits album: you've seen it all before, but everything is on top form. It's not an enormously ambitious game but it's the clear result of a decade of work since they switched to 3D. 4/5

Satisfactory

10. Satisfactory

Don't play this game, it's far too addictive!
