Life Is Strange

03/01/2017 Ep: 5 Played through all 5 episodes of this over the last three days. Pros * Graphics are great with a real painterly look at times. * Loved the music. * The atmosphere in the game is fantastic. * The interplay between Max and Chloe is fantastic. * The breadth of characters in the game. Although most of them are cliches, they are mostly well rounded with a nice mix of types. * The detail in the locations is great allowing for a lot of interaction that adds to the story and characters in the game. * The story and decisions feel like they have real weight, esp at the end of episode two. * Voice work is great. * The puzzles may be few but there are a couple of really good ones. Cons * Dialogue can be occassionally cheesy. * Puzzle lite * Tone of the story can be a bit up or down * Weird Stealth section Why?? I regret not playing this in 2015 when I bought it as it is a great game that puts most of the Telltale games in the shade. It will be interesting to see what they do with Season 2. 4.5/5

Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation

07/01/2017 You play as Amanda Ripley searching for what happened to the Nostromo and her mother. You end up on a space station in the middle of a disaster and you have to survive against humans, rogue androids and a alien monster out for blood. Pro * Superb recreation of the mood and look of Alien. The green screen monitors, 70’s tech and ship design is straight out the movie. * Everything from the lighting to the audio ramps up the feeling of dread. * The Alien is both terrifying and frustrating. It can’t be killed and if it spots you it’s more or less instant death. The tension mounts as you creep around and hide from it hoping it gets lost. * Crafting can make soom useful things like noisemakers to distract the alien. * Having hard save points creates a careful playthrough and also scares the pants off you until you get to the next one. * Scary as s**& Cons * It goes on a bit long. There are about 3 endings before the real one. * Hard save points are frustrating if you die 20 mins after using one. * The super Androids are fecking annoying. * Never used the Flares. Pointless items. Overall it’s a fantastic game that goes on too long. Best Alien licenced game ever. 4/5

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

29/01/2017 Chipping away at the pile of shame continues as I finally get round to completing (I actually restarted the game I was about 10% through). Back to 2013..... [strong]Assassin's Creed IV : Black Flag[/strong] Arhh Meh Harties!! Avast this be a Pirate game. Ok enough of that. This is a mixture of the normal Assassin's Creed parkour with a huge dollop of high sea adventures. The in town stuff is what you expect, climb towers, unlock side missions (of which there are a shit ton of items to collect and other busy work.), hide in bushes and murder people. The better part of the game and what makes it stand out is where you have a ship called the Jackdaw which you sail the seas around Jamaica, looting or sinking other ships for resources and loot to sell. Use the resources to make the ship better, get diving bells to plunder ship wrecks and battle storms rogue waves. The ship parts are the best parts of the game and it is a lot of fun to get in big ship battles and board ships for booty. There is also islands to explore, treasure to find, forts to blow to hell and take over (basically bases in Farcry as they unlock control of areas of the sea map) and whales and sharks to harpoon. Pros * Being a pirate and all the ship bits. * Open world sailing. Like grown up Wind Waker. * Varied locations and scenery. * Some of the side missions are fun like the Assassin's hunt for templar keys in the main cities or the shipping contracts for big money. * The weird present day locations where you are basically working for Ubisoft and the animus stuff is for a video game. There are about 4 mini games some of which were actually ok. * Graphics are fine, but the water and storm effects are pretty good. Cons * Way to much crap to collect. * Tail missions in towns - too many and boring * The Observatory etc story is bonkers as usual. * In town bits are still Meh! 4/5 just for it being Pirates. - 65% completion and 31 hrs 41 mins played.

BioShock: The Collection

BioShock: The Collection

Bioshock 11/02/2017 Part of the Bioshock PS4 Collection. To quote myself from the archive forum...
My favourite game of the year without a doubt. Exploring the underwater world of Rapture is a artistic dream. My only reservation is that the regeneration tanks make it far too easy and death meaningless within the game. I'm sure if you didn’t mind regenerating a billion times it's perfectly possible to complete the game using just the wrench (Except for maybe the end sequence when you can't regenerate) SS2 is one of my all time favourite games so the fact that this is a carbon copy doesn't detract from it's compelling narrative. The big shock twist that comes 3/4 of the way through is sublime in making you look back at your previous actions in the game. Not since System Shock 2 and Knights of the old Republic has there been such a fun twist in the story. A delight from start to finish.
More or less hold up to that. Playing it again was a lot of fun and while there have been games that have copied it there are few who have better it. I still think that the Vita chambers take some of the tension out of the game. As part of this new collection is adds in a directors commentary (which you have to find the parts in the game) and a walk around museum level where you get to see some of the original concepts. It's a nice upgrade and it runs very smoothly. A classic game. 5/5
