Great Games of 2024

by kalos

Games I loved in 2024. Likely includes older games and Game Pass titles.

Games I finished always appear higher on the list than ones I only sampled.

Rotwood

1. Rotwood

Always fun to dive into the forest with my kids and fight our way to the boss. I think the powers drops keep the game feeling fresh and I still haven't mastered the game enough to carve through higher Frenzy levels. I made this game, so I'm biased!

Cocoon

2. Cocoon

Cocoon does away with "follow this path that leads nowhere for a coin" and is constantly pushing you towards the golden path, but it also has a great set of challenging and engaging puzzles. It eases you in, but once you have multiple spheres, you'll have some brilliant thinking to do.

The Case of the Golden Idol

3. The Case of the Golden Idol

I never found the art for Golden Idol appealing, but I picked it up to do some puzzling after Cocoon and I'm enjoying it. Feels different from Obra Dinn, but scratches a similar detective itch. They really ease you into the gameplay with some easy starter cases.

Outer Wilds

4. Outer Wilds

Finally finished my space journey! I had a hard time with Brittle Hollow which made me put this game down a ton. Figuring out shortcuts is gratifying, but some took a lot of time. I find returning to a previous place of investigation tedious and often wished my ship had a menu for "fly here" that would timejump me past autopiloting and landing. I finally gave up on solving everything myself and looked up a few hints which helped me finally finish.

Inscryption

5. Inscryption

Finally picked up Inscryption and I'm loving it. The card game is good and I'm starting to see what's beneath the cracks. I reached the first "end" and lost my groove at the next section. The art and lack of atmosphere wasn't doing it for me. Even after the second "end", I'm having trouble sticking with it.

Tactical Breach Wizards

6. Tactical Breach Wizards

Loved the demo and Francis' past games. Enjoying it so far, and I blazed past my demo progress. Surprised to find how many ways they added diversions from the main path to add more content to the game -- and I want to do most of them! Loving the writing, strategy/puzzle, and abilities.

Tchia

7. Tchia

Played a ton and was enjoying it. Trying to get the hang of jumping bodies with agility. Love the unique setting. Collected the items to meet the big bad and while the new world was cool, I decided that I wasn't getting enough novelty, challenge, or narrative to keep me going.

Psychonauts 2

8. Psychonauts 2

Finally dove into this and I'm enjoying the humour and abilities. Trying to force myself to not collect every figment because I remember that being a drag on the first game. Collectithons are not good for my brain.

Palworld

9. Palworld

Playing with the kids. First survival game I've put much time into and it's fun to explore and capture new pals. I think the guns are dumb.

OlliOlli

10. OlliOlli

Installed as a quick time waster for my kids. The oldest and I are trading off trying to complete challenges. I find the controls really hard to wrap my head around (A is land and not jump but also go faster).
