GOTY 2013

by impulse87

Here are seven games that I felt were amongst the best I played this year.

Disclaimer: There are still some games I haven't spent enough time with to properly form an opinion of and still more games that look awesome but which I haven't had the opportunity to play yet.

Gone Home

1. Gone Home

Gone Home was by far the most unique experience I had this year, while also offering the most mature narrative I've explored in any videogame.

Beyond: Two Souls

2. Beyond: Two Souls

The overall arc in Beyond isn't as grounded or as coherent as in Heavy Rain, but despite that fact I had way more fun playing Beyond; not only did I feel that the gameplay systems we're much improved, Jodie herself made each scene memorable thanks to Ellen Page's stunning portrayal of her character.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

3. StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

Despite a lackluster campaign and an increasingly generic story arc; new units, greater map variety and an improved matchmaking UI helped propell an already great multiplayer experience to new heights.

Path of Exile

4. Path of Exile

It can be hard for any game to live up to the memory of an old favorite, that being said; Path of Exile mirrors the exact feeling of playing Diablo II some thirteen odd years ago.

7 Grand Steps

5. 7 Grand Steps

7 Grand Steps tells the story of a family over countless generations and their fortunes (or misfortunes!) along the way. While the basic premise is intriguing; the real star of the show are the simple yet utterly addictive gameplay mechanics.

BioShock Infinite

6. BioShock Infinite

The combat in the BioShock games never felt quite right to me, but I still enjoyed my adventure through Columbia thanks to the detailed depiction of the city itself and the twisting narrative.

Outlast

7. Outlast

Outlast start of as one of the scariest games I've ever played, and althought that feeling subsides once the actual game mechanics kick in; I still thought this was one hell of a thrill ride.
