Doom is such a strong and triumphant return to form for FPS gameplay that it makes otherwise competent shooters feel slow and uninspired. While it owes much of its character to 25 year old games, it uses them so smartly that it might as well be brand new. Enemies are distinct and require different strategies, every weapon has a specific purpose, and it manages all of this at a fast and frantic pace. Doom 2016 is really, really good.
