Best of 2019

I ended up playing less games overall this year than most, and here are my top 10 that I've either finished or played enough and am eager to get back to.

1. Control

Loved this game to my surprise, and glad I played on PC as it looked amazing. I had fun with the plot and world displayed in the game and the powers and weapons provided gave ample tools to play around with.

Resident Evil 2

2. Resident Evil 2

I've loved Resident Evil since the original released in 1996. In their best iterations, they hit a sweet spot of having cool monsters and action. This remake of 2 exceeded all of my expectations and was a great mix of an old plot and scenario with more modern design and gameplay. And man, the dread I felt when hearing Mr. X's footsteps....so good.

Devil May Cry 5

3. Devil May Cry 5

I had fun with this. While Nero and Dante could feel a bit similar at times, V was an interesting addition to the game. Ultimately, a lot of the stages would end up feeling samey, but I had a lot of fun playing through this and loved the extra feature of replacing the cutscenes with storyboard recordings.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

While I've played most of the Call of Duty games, I think only WWII remains unplayed for me, it's been a while since I've dipped seriously into multiplayer. Modern Warfare has broken that streak as it moved away from specialists with abilities. The campaign did some interesting things, though it took itself too seriously, and I really like that crossplay is enabled across all platforms. It's about time and one of my favorite emerging trends.

Gears 5

5. Gears 5

I had fun playing through the campaign here and it took some interesting turns. I don't really get into Gears multiplayer, so I may be done with this.

Disco Elysium

6. Disco Elysium

This game is great with its writing and I am still meaning to get back to it. Great art, great music, and a wealth of options in the approaches you take.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

7. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

While I was ready for this to end by the time I wrapped it up, that was ultimately after 45-ish hours with my Golden Deer troupe. As always, a number of characters became unstoppable powerhouses (Raphael, Claude, Hilda) which made it more difficult to want to use other characters, but it always felt good to demolish the enemy with them.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

8. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

I'm still working my way through this, but am having a good deal of fun with a single player Star Wars action game with some Metroid and Dark Souls elements. This may have ended up a bit higher if I got around to finishing it sooner.

Ape Out

9. Ape Out

Feels, sounds and looks great to smash through these levels while the music adapts to how you play.

The Outer Worlds

10. The Outer Worlds

Another game I was ready for it to finish when I was wrapping it up...this was a very good western RPG in a new world. I enjoyed this more than Fallout 4 as that still sits around the 20 hr mark when I fell off of it.
