The (Not Completely, Absolutely Official Just Yet But Pretty Close) Top 100 SNES Games List

by mento

I added the final few candidates for this list at the end of the Supertember feature but then forgot to actually publish the thing afterwards. So here it is, my (Current) Top 100 picks for what to play on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, provided you have all the necessary peripherals and translation patches. I've also included a "16 word bit" on why I liked the game enough to rank it where it is.

If you've noticed any conspicuous absences, well, I'm probably working on getting them on there. Slowly. Turns out a system with almost 1,800 games takes a while to examine in full.

Showing 1-10 of 100 items

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

(Nintendo EAD, 1991) The gold standard of Zelda games, perfectly balancing the series pillars of discovery, challenge, and cogitation.

Super Mario World

2. Super Mario World

(Nintendo EAD, 1990) Yoshi's debut offers an enhanced take on mechanics established in Mario Bros. 3 with great music.

Chrono Trigger

3. Chrono Trigger

(Squaresoft, 1995) Fantastic worldbuilding, deep narrative, svelte runtime, and a cool frog; all enhanced by Toriyama's distinctive art.

Final Fantasy VI

4. Final Fantasy VI

(Squaresoft, 1994) An experimentally dense game with multiple subplots and a huge cast, Squaresoft stretching the system's limits.

Super Metroid

5. Super Metroid

(Nintendo R&D1, 1994) An early paragon of the modern exploraction game complete with multiple upgrades and its own map.

Terranigma

6. Terranigma

(Quintet, 1995) Strong action game core bolsters a contemplative and wild narrative about the rebirth of our world.

EarthBound

7. EarthBound

(Ape Inc, 1994) Satirical, eccentric, and wholly distinct (except for siblings), EarthBound remains the system's most sui generis game.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

(Nintendo EAD, 1995) You couldn't beat World so the sequel went weird instead, including crayola aesthetics and egg-tossing mechanics.

Secret of Mana

9. Secret of Mana

(Square, 1993) The pastel hues and cute sprites belie a bleak, tough action game with plenty of teeth.

Kirby Super Star

10. Kirby Super Star

(HAL Laboratory, 1996) Offering multiple games in one, Superstar is the premier Kirby experience with its variety and charms.
