GOTY 2015

by jimi

After skipping last year due to finishing university and starting a job eating into my game time, here's my list for 2015.

A few games that could probably have made the list if I had time to play them: Mad Max, Forza 6, Until Dawn, Soma, Tales from the Borderlands, Life is Strange, Fallout 4, Halo 5, Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Just Cause 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, I think a Shadowrun game came out this year.

Going to make an effort in 2016 to actually finish more games!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

It's the most fantastically crafted, engaging and beautiful experience of the year. Fantastic universe with fun but occasionally clunky gameplay. I can't imagine this being topped in terms of RPGs for a long time.

Bloodborne

2. Bloodborne

I experienced some fatigue with Dark Souls 2, a lot of the control and systems didn't really feel tight. Bloodborne brought me back in, it's the best parts of the souls series with a more action focused combat system. Top notch.

Pillars of Eternity

3. Pillars of Eternity

Bringing back all the good memories of the infinity engine games, could use a better tutorial for people like me who can't remember all the D&D rules off hand though! It isn't just a throwback, the strong narrative and world make it stand out on it's own.

Undertale

4. Undertale

Fantastically charming, it's hard to describe what is so amazing about this game without spoiling some of the surprise that comes with the experience. I smiled more playing this game than any other in recent memory,

5. Assassin's Creed Syndicate

It's a glitchy mess sometimes but damn jumping around industrial revolution era London is a blast. Tons of fun with great art direction.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

6. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

This is cheating a bit, I only got to the heavensward content towards the end of the year! Never the less I dumped a lot of time into FFXIV this year, it's the most polished and fun MMO I've played since WOTLK era Warcraft.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

7. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

This should have been higher but the story lets it down massively. I've historically played MGS for the story and this one has effectively none? It would not be on the list if not for the groundbreaking gameplay and all the little things that make a Kojima game unique. Quite disappointed with the end product, but a much better game than previous entries?

Super Mario Maker

8. Super Mario Maker

It's just pure fun, both playing and watching people play this is the most fun and engaging thing Nintendo has put out on the Wii-U.

Her Story

9. Her Story

Neat little murder mystery that was told in a unique way for this era of gaming. FMV will always have a special place in my heart, this was pulled off superbly. It didn't blow me away but it has definitely stuck with me this year.

Rocket League

10. Rocket League

I haven't played as much of this as I would have liked, but this needs to be on my list. A great concept that leads to the same explosions of joy and excitement that a traditional sport would.
