Lunark

1. Lunark

2023. "Cinematic Platformer" inspired by Flashback. The low pixel aesthetic was initially a bit hard on the eyes but the smooth animation and environmental variety makes up for a lot of it. Generally did good job feeling weighty in its movement as well though some transitions wen pulling out your gun was difficult for me to deal with. Some of the writing wasn't so good, though maybe it was also undercooked as a result of trying to be concise. Plot itself was kinda fun though. Using 3D models to achieve a sort of "rotoscoped" effect for cutscenes or incidental scenes such as pulling switches was also a neat Flashback callback, and helps give it the feel of the games it was inspired by. It does a lot with its limited mechanics from level to level and really achives having slow, heavy platforming that feels distinct from the more standardized platformer feel.

Full Void

2. Full Void

2023. Another Cinematic Platformer. This one seems a bit more inspired by Another World, or perhaps newer ones such as Inside. There's no Hud and no combat and it has chapter select similar to Inside. It has very smooth transitions between gameplay or other animation, like a death scene, and a story told without words. I liked the pretty and moody scenes you were moving through and there's some really awesome looking animation in there as well. The game moves between timed platforming with the occasional chase scene and environmental exploration/puzzle solving. Both are satisfying due to the nice art and animation. Gameplay can get a bit trial and error in chase scenes but transitions between getting caught and restarting the next checkpoint are smooth so it doesn't get too frustrating. Ultimately it felt very effective in what it set out to do; tell a simple atmospheric story with a balanced gameplay challenge. It's got some creepy imagery and mystery and the sense of danger from a world bigger than you are, that this type of game really needs. A nice treat for someone like me who enjoys the genre.

Tomb Raider I-II-III Remastered

3. Tomb Raider I-II-III Remastered

Old but fun games. A bit tricky to find your way sometimes but the heavy controls feels like you're moving a mech around so that's fun. Finished 2 of 3.

Penny's Big Breakaway

4. Penny's Big Breakaway

Yoying around at the speed of clown! Had some controller issues but also the game itself didn't stick with me. Visually I'm just not a big fan, and the gameplay hasn't been what I hoped for in a 3D momentum based platformer, in my time with it.

Temtem

5. Temtem

2020. Pretty fun combat system, monster designs are a bit hit and miss, often sorata plain. Weird story sometime. Unfinished cause I needed a active PS+ sub to play it, it being an always online game.

Haven

6. Haven

2020. Simple but engaging game. Good storytelling, cozy moments that have a tinge of real to them. Also good use of Anime aesthetics.

The First Descendant

7. The First Descendant

A decent run and gun, free-to-play, games-as-a-service type game. Its third person shooting and zipping around with a hookshot was enjoyable, story arc and characters entirely forgetable. It's unlockable characters are pretty if sometimes a bit one note. Committed to not spending money and eventually ran out of content and free character slots, so while fun for a few weeks I'm not likely to come back.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

8. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

2022. Fun game. I'm not into the Rabbids style of humor, though it's hard to describe what exactly the writing does that I don't gel with. There's some low-brow jokes but mostly it has an attitude to the world that seems...aimed at kids? but in a way where it makes fun of the things kids wouldn't understand by making those characters pretentious, or otherwise morally compromised? Similar vibes maybe to some 90's cartoon, perhaps that's what the franchise has always been going for. Thought the number of Party members hasn't gone up from the first games 3, there's a lot more freedom in your party make-up, which might be while it has been pretty easy to maximize efficiency even at the harder difficulty. I feel like having an additional level of difficulty to unlock over that one might have helped me stay on my toes, but I still enjoy steamrolling most battles as it is right now. There's a better sense of exploration than the very straightfrward first game. But also the Switch can't quite keep up with it and the graphics seem kinda compromised. It's still nicely animated tho. Overall I'd say it's a good and worthy addition to the pantheon of Mario RPG games. Story and humor might miss but the mechanics are very fun and satisfying to play with.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket

9. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket

I've not played the original card game but this is fun. Also Free.
