Botching a popular or beloved character is a hard thing for most people to forgive. And yet, its happened multiple times.

Movie version
Batman and Robin version, which took one of Batman's deadliest foes and turned him into naught but dumb muscle.
The CW show version. Really wish folks wouldn't use that show as an excuse to hate the character in general though, because COMIC Batwoman is awesome.
The DCEU version sure seems to be.
Well the movie version anyway.
TV version after she loses it in the last two episodes, with that also being one of the MANY reasons why the last season of Game of Thrones is loathed and seen as an utter disaster.
