My kids and I played a bunch of this a few years back. My kids and I played a bunch of Balatro last year too. When Poncle released Balatro DLC for Vampire Survivors (FREE DLC no less) we went back HARD. We've been playing VS on whatever platform we can: My Switch 1, Switch 2, their Switch Lite, my phone and my PC. We even tried the Co-op funtion and that's been a blast too. There's SO much stuff to find and unlock it's crazy to think we've barely scratched the surface. I thought I was pretty far in but then my younger kid found out there's a second set of Arcana to unlock. WHAT!? I love this game.
I just booted this up a couple days ago and I'm still 4 chapters in but I've laughed harder than I have for any of the games on this list. I kept the quicktime events during cutscenes to keep me engaged. I feel like I should be able to fail in a game like this even if it is a sinple click during a cutscene. Especially if it affects the outcome of the story, even if it's just visual. Looking forward to boothing this up as soon as I am done posting this list.
Donkey Kong does what he does best in this game, which is punch things with his fists and makes them explode. I was so relieved that the game designers over at Nintendo gave him free reign to just do Donkey Kong-ass stuff to the world with hardly any limits. "Oh, he can punch and dig and climb on practically anything without a stamina bar? Yes, please!"
This game was actually higher on my list until earlier this month. The story is great and the battle system was engaging and deep even though it took a long time for me to wrap my head around it and was still giving me tutorials over 10 hours in. But the Ggacha functionality for the Blades really soured me in the latter half. My fault for doing this but, I spent a huge amount of time on a series of side quests for a Blade to get her to max her talent tree out only to find I couldn't actually complete the quest unless I had 3 Blades with a certain skill needed to execute the final mercenary mission, of which I had 2. The guide I used said there were 5 Blades with this skill, 2 of which are story critical and cannot be used for missions which left me with 1 Blade who I needed and was not lucky enough to pull. So, that was 30+ hours of grinding for nothing. Story's still good though. I intend to finish it next year.
I contemplated putting this at #1 even though I just booted this up for 10 minutes just to say I played it this year. Suikoden is my favorite RPG series and as a whole, I rank it above FInal Fantasy and Dragon Quest (Yes, despite Suikoden IV being an absolute dumpster fire). But to be fair to the other games on this list, I'll keep it at the middle. I know I'll be playing both these games as soon as I finish up Xenoblade 2. GOD, I hope they port Suikoden III to current consoles/PC. It is an underappreciated gem and a worthy entry into the Suikoden franchise despite its reputation at the time of its release.
I played this for the first time since 2002 after watching Snowbike Mike play it on his Twitch channel. The game is damn good and (with apologies to FFXIV since I've only played up to the 1st DLC) is my favorite Final Fantasy game in the last 25 years. Unlike my previous run, I went and tried to get every Aeon and everyone's weapon upgraded to their full potential. I only gave up with Wakka's because, heaven forgive me, it was just TOO MUCH Blitzball. I tried, I really did. I didn't play X-2. Never beat it when I got it on PS2 and I don't know if I ever will.
Bought a Switch 2 for this. It's GOOD! Something felt off with it for some reason which kept me from loving it but I had a couple fun nights inviting friends over to my place to race and unlock outfits. Daisy for life!
I;ve mentioned this in a forum post on the old site but, to keep it short, there's too much side stuff that distracts me from the main story at hand. I just want to go from point A to point B on the world map but every few steps a baby CVhocobo pops up to tell me of a new fast travel point (helpful!) or an owl wants me to follow it to some crystal formation (not that helpful) or some hooligan bunnies are just loitering around with some treasure I have to hot/cold to dig up (please stop!). Like, my ADHD cannot just ignore these things so I spend way too much time on this HUGE overworld without doing anything to progress the story. The game is beautiful and funny, don't get me wrong, but I miss the enclosed areas of FFVII Remake that had a handful of side quests and once you were done, you could move on. I love FFVII too much to not finish it though.
Another game I had a bunch of fun playing with my kids and also with friends after we stopped playing Mario Kart. Who knew Yahtzee was so fun?
I learned of this game through a Penny Arcade strip about FMV games. I've only played 10 minutes of the demo and in that time I was hit by a truck, taken to the hospital, told the nurse I can't feel "Down There" and then she scratched the bottom of my foot.
