This is a game I fully expect to come out in 2020. But I also thought my GOTY of 2018, Return of the Obra Dinn, woulod release in 2019. So I'll be optimistic this time. It's also a game that's hype has blown up to an unreasonable degree, and I expect that it'll be disappointing to many. But if it can come close to achieving the promise of the immersive, dynamic, detailed world shown in its spectacular 45-minute demo, it'll be one of the greats of this generation. Fingers crossed.
You know, Resident Evil 7 was real good. I'm actually not super familiar with the original RE2, or what genre this remake is trying to operate in, but I've got faith in this series for the time being.
This is my conservative guess for what will end up being the best game of 2019. And honestly, my thoughts are just that Bloodborne and Dark Souls were great games and this will probably be one too. I personally think that Dark Souls was somewhat brought down by its RPG elements, while Bloodborne was brought down by slightly moving away from Dark Souls' nonlinear design. FromSoft has promised that Sekiro will be more of a straightforward action game, while giving the player more freedom in terms of exploring the world. So here's hoping this ends up being the perfection of the Soulslike formula.
The one trailer we've seen looked a little budget, and the humor was a little grating. But you know what, New Vegas is maybe the best RPG I've ever played, and if this game lands its satire right it could be another great.
I love MetroidVanias, and its far too rare to see a big budget, 3D entry in that genre. Furthermore, Remedy is one of the more talented, stylish developers out there, and I look forward to what they'll do in this space.
The original Psychonauts is a spectacular game, mostly due to its spectacular premise that surprisingly few have stolen: every level takes place in a characters mind. If this sequel can remain as competent and creative as its predecessor, it'll be one of the best of 2019.
The DOOM reboot was one of the tighter action games ever made. And while the humor in the early gameplay seems to have stepped down a little, the addition of a grappling hook and laser sword give me faith that the combat of DOOM will continue to be very, very metal.
Fire Emblem: Awakening was a great game, and my introduction to the strategy genre. I'm extremely excited to see what this team does with the power of an HD console, and the small amount they've shown has me intrigued.
I fucking love the original Luigi's Mansion. I think it's super underrated. It has a great gameplay hook with the portrait ghosts, and nails a great tone that allows for some legitimate eeriness, while still being appropriate for children. The sequel, handled by the very talented Next Level Games, is still good, but failed to capture a lot of the original's best qualities. I trust they'll make another great game here, but if they can deliver on the aspects of the first that they missed out on, they'll have another classic.
It takes a lot to get my interested in a game about zombies. As it turns out, Chris Avellone meets that criteria. Prey, Fallout: New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol have all been games I've enjoyed a lot, and the footage we've seen of Dying Light 2 has hinted at providing some of the same politically maneuvering those games offered.
