GOTY 2014

These are my favourite games of 2014.

P.T. doesn't have a page of its own, but if you consider that a game it's far and away my GOTY.

I also really liked Broken Age: Act 1 and Game of Thrones: Iron from Ice, but the rest of the game isn't out yet.

Mario Kart 8

Alien: Isolation

2. Alien: Isolation

While sometimes frustration can substract from the horror, Alien still manages to present an incredible atmosphere and some of the most memorable moments of the year. It feels much more original than other games with this level of production value and polish, and is deserving of praise for that alone.

Transistor

3. Transistor

An unconventional strategy game with an interesting art style. Its mechanics take a while to hook you, but once you figure out how the game flows you begin to enjoy it a lot.

Hearthstone

4. Hearthstone

A game that's fun from your first try, and deepens with every return.

Bayonetta 2

5. Bayonetta 2

Puts the best skills of Platinum Games on display, with insane set-pieces, fast paced yet defensive combat, and endless replayability.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

6. South Park: The Stick of Truth

Parker and Stone's style and sense of humour remain entirely intact without getting in the way of enjoyable gameplay.

Shovel Knight

7. Shovel Knight

Tight level design and unique mechanical tweaks let Shovel Knight stick out in a massively overcrowded genre.

Dark Souls II

8. Dark Souls II

The Evil Within

9. The Evil Within

A game with many highs and lows. At its worst it's frustrating and archaic, but at its best The Evil Within is tense, beautiful, original, and exciting. Fortunately, the game contains more highs than lows, and left me wanting a sequel that fixes some of its issues.
