Fire Emblem: Awakening

1. Fire Emblem: Awakening

2013 started off with one hell of a snowstorm here in Massachusetts. In fact, it got so bad that at one point there was a driving ban. You literally could not get anywhere, meaning I was blocked off from most contact with the world during sporadic power loss. During this time, I cracked open my copy of Fire Emblem and NEVER STOPPED PLAYING UNTIL EVERYTHING WAS DONE. The characters were likable, the extra layer of relationships among units made the already deep combat of the game deeper, and the graphics, music, and general tone of the game just wouldn't let me put it down. When I think of games I played in 2013, yes, I will think of the ending of Bioshock and the crazy cat suits of Mario, but I'll mostly remember being eased into a state of mind in which I cared about and could do nothing but play this game.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Let it be known this is the game that sent me down the path of playing other Zelda games and still thinking this was the best one. This was one hell of a year for Nintendo.

Super Mario 3D World

3. Super Mario 3D World

This game made me buy a Wii U. I have absolutely no interest in the Wii U. Think about that for a second.

BioShock Infinite

4. BioShock Infinite

Apparently I'm one of the few who absolutely loved the combat that comes secondary to this amazing work of fiction. I had as much fun thinking about it as I did playing it. Not many games get you to think, if you think about it (don't).

Rayman Legends

5. Rayman Legends

The pace of this game is incredible, the art style is phenomenal, and the music is some of the best this year. There's really not much else to say. If you even slightly like platformers, this Jolly Rancher for the eyes belongs on your shelf/digital library/bug out bag.

DmC Devil May Cry

6. DmC Devil May Cry

I'm a big fan of the old Devil May Cry games. In fact, the third is one of my favorite games, period. That being said, I still think this reboot does a hell of a lot to pump some life into not only the DMC franchise, but the genre in general. Also, make sure to check out that Vergil DLC if you haven't already.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

7. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

It came as no surprise to me that some of the Far Cry 3 team worked on this. They are geniuses at making me go out of my way to collect every single thing (including SHANTIES), explore every area of the map, and make my character be exactly how I want. Yeah, the combat is weak and eavesdropping is still a chore, but sometimes the game outside of the game is the best part.

Saints Row IV

8. Saints Row IV

Saints Row IV is, in my opinion, not as good as Saints Row The Third. That is almost like saying the new Star Wars movies aren't as good as the old ones, or nothing tops Tetris. Even coming close to Third in the humor and story department is a feat in itself. The game was fun to play, too.

The King of Fighters XIII

9. The King of Fighters XIII

When the Steam version of KOF hit the store, I was unsure of if I wanted to buy it again for some new characters and a promised better netcode. Then I remembered who I was and how much money I spend on fighting games. KOF XIII is probably my favorite fighting game to come out since Street Fighter IV, which is really saying something.

Divekick

10. Divekick

I have played over 20 hours of this and have a serious problem.
