I forgot to update this the past few years oh well. Time to start again.
Also, I'm hesitant to even make a top 5 list this year because of the few number of games I finished this year from this year.

it has nearly been a decade since I last liked a Sonic game (I'm not a fan of any of the 3d ones). This has been a great blend of nostalgia and new experiences for me to enjoy. Part of me wants a sequel immediately, but I'm also fine with this being viewed as a proper send-off for Sonic.

This game helped me solidify that I don't actually like the Persona series. I love this games style, music, and nods to mythology in Japanese history. I don't like how almost every potential relationship in this game is toxic, a good chunk of the dialogue, the setup for the story, and how the ending rips a good chunk of atmosphere from SMTIV. This game made me realize that I just like SMT proper instead of this spin-off.
I've played every xeno game known to man (I've even played the japanese exclusives although I didn't finish them). Playing this game was inevitable although every preview of it turned me off. I'm grateful for this game for answering a single question I had: if lootboxes were in a game with zero opportunities to acquire them through microtransactions, would I enjoy the game? The answer to that question is no.
So I haven't played Yakuza 0. I picked this up due to a bunch of credit I had making this $5. This is my first Yakuza game ever and I loved it. I've been holding out for Shenmue for well over a decade when likely this is all I've really wanted. I'll pick up 0 soon enough and will prepare myself for more Majima.
Part of my Extra Life 2017 stream. This game felt completely naked to me. You learn all of the actions you can do in this game within the first 15 minutes. The game is like 6 hours. The story is filled with shitty tropes and they didn't even bother to physically put anything in breakable items, just text pops up saying you got an emergency currency that doesn't matter. The story also goes on for far too long and is terrible.
Part of my extra life 2017 stream. Does this count as a dating game? If so, this is the second one I've ever played. Also, this game is more of a commentary of that genre and visual novels as a whole. It cannot be overstated how great this game is and it belongs in a special list with Undertale and Pony Island.

This is the first 3d Zelda game I've ever liked (Since I'm not allowed to count Hyrule Warriors). It gets rid of all of the staples of previous games that annoyed me while I got to focus on what I really want to do in the first place, hunt lynels.
I was indifferent about this game as more announcements for it came out, but with it in my hands and 90 hours later, I love it. Hyrule Warriors has better diversity of weapons, but this game has pairing and a load of skills you can learn by bonding with your allies. It also takes things from the Dragon Quest and Hyrule Warriors legends games by letting you switch to different characters on the map (something sorely missing from the Wii U version of Hyrule Warriors). I don't play every single musou game, but this will likely be my last till Dynasty Warriors 9 comes out so I can be reunited with my man Wei Yan. Also, Tiki is the best, it is just maths!
