Mass Effect 2

1. Mass Effect 2

+ Amazing story
+ Entertaining and challenging combat
+ Well paced mission design
+ Rich universe and characters

Heavy Rain

2. Heavy Rain

+ Like nothing I've played before
+ Control system creates a real physical connection with the characters
+ Several genuinely tense and frightening moments
- One very ham-handed plot twist

Red Dead Redemption

3. Red Dead Redemption

+ A vast and beautifully rendered open world where even picking flowers is strangely engaging
+ John Marsden is a fantastic protagonist
- The main story is about 15 missions too long
- John Marsden isn't available for the post-plot free roam

Halo: Reach

4. Halo: Reach

+ Enemy A.I. that's a lot of fun to fight
+ More multi-player content than I could ever digest
+ Level designs that showcase what makes Halo great
-Slow multi-player level progression

Call of Duty: Black Ops

5. Call of Duty: Black Ops

+ Multi-player that rekindles the magic created by COD4
+ Well paced and gratifying leveling system
- Campaign tells an interesting story, but feels more on-rails than ever

Bayonetta

6. Bayonetta

+ In a year where I realized that I don't care much for button-combo third-person action games, I found that I really enjoy the video game burlesque that is Bayonetta.
+ Not getting locked into attack animations -- like in God of War -- makes you feel like you have complete control.
+ Bright, ridiculous and full of video gameness, it stands out from myriad titles set in dilapidated, desaturated shit-holes.
- The tone becomes a little too serious in the final couple of chapters.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

7. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

+ Best digital acting since Uncharted 2
+ Colorful post-apocalyptic setting is a nice switch from the dirty, gray worlds presented in other post-apocalypse games
+ Perfectly paced story
- Because of the game's simplicity, portions of it (especially puzzle-solving) can feel tedious

Singularity

8. Singularity

+ The Time Manipulation Device is just as fun as Half-Life 2's gravity gun both in combat and when used for puzzle-solving
+ A fun time travel story with above-average internal logic
- Ends before you have time to enjoy the fruits of your labors i.e. all the your fully upgraded weapons and powers

File:Alan Wake Game Cover.jpg

9. Alan Wake

+ Story-telling that blends Stephen King with David Lynch to good effect
+ Alan control with a good sense of momentum, and the shooting it a lot of fun
- Not enough enemy variety
- Product placement harms the game's aesthetics

Just Cause 2

10. Just Cause 2

+ An immense open world with a lot of fun toys
+ Random destruction furthers the core game
+ Quietly drifting to the ground from great heights with the wind rippling through the parachute never got old for me.
- Most structures can't be destroyed
- The story is mediocre at best
