2019 GOTY

For me this was one of the best years of the console cycle, lots of great RPGs both big and small. Several games I was very interested in I never even got a chance to touch, Outer Wilds, Outer Worlds, Link's Awakening, and a few even got bumped from this list but in other years might have made the cut, Trails of Cold Steel 1, Kingdom Hearts 3, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

Great characters and world building, it is really cool to run into the other NPC students from the first game all grown up and working in different parts of the society. This entry in particular perfects the combat systems and reaches the peak of turned based JRPGs. Every RPG going forward should have the fast-forward button to turn on and off as desired.

Death Stranding

2. Death Stranding

The music and atmosphere of this game is fantastic. It felt like something unique and different, and I enjoyed the traversal gameplay, planning out routes, trying to find the most efficient way, creating networks of ziplines and roads. The story is a little obtuse but I found it fascinating overall as I learned more, though all the data entries and e-mails were too small font. An overall beautiful and contemplative game.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

It is rare that a game as long and detailed as this would inspire me to a second playthrough...however it did and both times were awesome. This game also helped to me to hate the end of Game of Thrones. The Black Eagles route covers many of the same story beats except with a clarity of purpose and direction and empathy. Black Eagles forever.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

4. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

A fantastic follow up and continuation of the first game. I did not want to have three Trails games on my list (I easily could have but there are so many other games I liked just a little bit better than the first Cold Steel). CS2 is a refinement over 1 in many ways and it is also provides an very satisfying continuation of the world and character building.

Resident Evil 2

5. Resident Evil 2

Survival-horror games are hit or miss for me based on a lot of little playability factors. RE2 controls fluidly, loads quickly, looks amazing and is fun to play, even if Mr. X adds a level of tension I don't always care for.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

6. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

An excellent and very fun (and quirky) metroidvania. Also some great late game abilities that almost break the game, but in creative and fun ways.

Indivisible

7. Indivisible

A very fun story and cast of characters, several of which should be nominated in any best character categories.

Children of Morta

8. Children of Morta

River City Girls

9. River City Girls

Great music and style combined with a fun premise and classic beat-em up gameplay.

Pokémon Sword/Shield

10. Pokémon Sword/Shield

A fantastic Pokémon game on console.
