Gaming in 2013 - The List So Far

Figured I would get my 2013 list started even though it's still technically 2012. Since the GOTY stuff is all over, this should be as good a time as any, right? This will be a mix of old and new stuff that I've played for this year. Since i'm starting this during a two-week break from work, I've played through a surprising amount of games already!

Saints Row: The Third

1. Saints Row: The Third

Ehh...you know, I was really pulled in by the first 30 minutes or so. Really funny, with some great action set pieces too. But, once I got into the open world, and ended up at some customization house, the endlessly respawning enemy gangster helicopters shooting me as I tried to just get away to do something else reminded me how much I fucking HATE open-world city crime games like GTA, Sleeping Dogs, and this. Argh, it's so frustrating, because the beginning was SO promising.

Mark of the Ninja

2. Mark of the Ninja

Near flawless, mechanically, and the ending is really cool. I must have really enjoyed it, since I played through it in two sittings, but I found myself really frustrated at several parts, mostly from trying to do too much, too fast I guess. Overall, a really good game. Definitely recommend it!

Doom 3

3. Doom 3

I looooove me some Doom 3. It's so impressive that a game closing in on ten years old still looks so damn good, and that's thanks to it's impressive use of lighting. It created a really dark, creepy atmosphere, and when color is mixed in, it's pure eye candy. Fuck the haters, this game is great!

Shatter

4. Shatter

This game is a ton of fun. Breakout-style games are always great to play, and this one puts a really unique spin on the formula. God damn that soundtrack is good, too. SO GOOD. Recommended!

Crysis

5. Crysis

One of the best first person shooters ever made. There, I said it. Come at me, bro. Seriously though, I absolutely adore this game. The suit mechanics make me feel like a superhuman, sneaking through the jungle in stealth one moment, and then absorbing bullets like a tank the next. Even five years later, the graphics are still the benchmark by which all games today are judged. HIGHLY recommended!

KRUNCH

6. KRUNCH

Woo boy, this is a tough one! I rage-quit after about 20 minutes since it gets so hard, so quickly. For those of you who love those super-tough platformers, this will be right at home in your library, though it's not a platformer in the traditional sense. Cool sense of style, and a killer soundtrack. Recommended!

Anno 2070

7. Anno 2070

Interesting game, for sure. It's like part Sim City, part RTS-something-or-other. Really slick interface and presentation. Only put in a couple hours so far, but from what i've played, it's complex and engaging.
